Huinker, Edna  (14 JUNE 1918-27 DEC 2009)

 

Edna Catherine Grap Huinker, 91, Dubuque, Iowa, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 2009, at Stone Hill Care Center, Dubuque, surrounded by here loving family, following a very brief illness. Services were held at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec, 30, at the Church of the Nativity, Dubuque. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greenwood, at a later date.

 

Edna Catherine Hinker was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1918, in Greenwood, to Edward and Frances (nee Einck) Hinker. She went to St. Mary’s Catholic School until the end of her eighth grade year. She married Franklin "Kaiser" Grap in 1945; he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1957. She later married Gregory Huinker in 1960, he preceded her in death in 1985.

 

As a widow, she worked at Schroeder Funeral Home, Marling Lumber Company, and a doctor’s office to support her two young children. She eventually left Madison and moved to Ossian, Iowa, in 1960. She and her husband farmed until 1972, when they moved to town. She then retired when she turned 62. She later moved to Dubuque to be near her two children and their families.

 

She was a faithful member of St. Raphael’s Cathedral, Madison, St. Francis De Sales, Ossian, Iowa, and The Church of the Nativity, Dubuque, Iowa. She also attended Mass often at St, Columbkille’s after moving to her apartment. She  will be most remembered for her strong faith in God; her deep love for her family, and her enjoyment in watching the Cubs and Packers. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a great cook.

 

Survivors include her son, Gary Grap, Dubuque; her daughter, Cheryl (Bob) Wernwe, Dubuque; her daughter-in-law, Vickie Grap, Neillsville; 16 grandchildren, Conan, Mya, Martia, Kaiser, Garrett, Magdalena, Lola, Isaac, Jasmine, Michael, Kevin, Tammie, Kaila, Mark Kirstin and Justin; 12 great-grandchildren; her niece and goddaughter, JoAnn Kaiser;a sister-in-law, Viola Tessmer; nephews Gene, Ron, Francis, Allen, Robert, and Bill hinker, and many extended family and friends.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; five brothers, Sylvester, Alphonse, Marcellas, Richard and Cletus Hinker; a daughter, Patty Ann; a step-son, Wayne Grap; and many treasured family members and friends.

 

Memorials may be given in her name to the Cancer Society, Dubuque County Right to Life, and Nativity Parish.

 

The Leonard Funeral Home & Creamatory, Dubuque, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
