Hovland, Oscar (? - 26 June 1957)

Funeral services for the Rev. Oscar Hovland, 64, who died June 26, in a hospital at Sacramento, Calif., were held at the Methodist Church, Merrillan, Sunday, June 30, with the Rev. Mr. Clausen, Wesleyan Methodist pastor, officiating. The Rev. Mr. Clausen is a retired pastor and former pastor of the Hovlands.

Oscar Hovland was born in Jackson County, at Northfield, where interment took place Sunday in the family lot. An ordained Wesleyan Methodist minister, he served pastorates at Marengo, Guthrie Center and Bristol in Iowa; at Garden Valley Wesleyan Church near Hixton, and conducted services on man y occasions in Merrillan.

Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Hovland came to Neillsville, purchasing a home at 1411 Hewett, where they have resided since that time.  Before moving here Mr. Hovland was employed at the Nelson Muffler factory in Neillsville, and he continued in this work until hospitalized last winter.

Serving as pastor of the West Beaver Community Church, north of Loyal, for two and one-half years, and pastor of the Sherwood Community Church for three and one-half years, Mr. Hovland was forced to give up his pastorates when he became ill about six months ago.  Entering a hospital, he underwent major surgery, but continued in failing health. The latter part of May, Mr. and Mrs. Hovland decided to go to California to be near their daughter, Mrs. Eldred (Elvina) Perkins, of Sacramento.  A week ago, he suffered a relapse.

Mr. Hovland is survived by his wife Selma and by two daughters, Mrs. Perkins of California and Ellen, Mrs. Harold Oldenburg, of Norwalk.
