Wilferd Eugene Vander Hyden was born on Nov. 11, 1925, in Thorp, the son of Wilferd G. and Dena (Moe) Vander Hyden. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in Thorp, graduating from Thorp High School. Junior entered the U.S. Navy on March 21, 1944, and served until his honorable discharge on May 23, 1946. After his discharge, he worked in Milwaukee for a short time before moving back to Thorp and working for his dad distributing Leinenkugel Beer. He was united in marriage to Audrey Schultze on Sept. 10, 1949, at St. Bernard's Rectory in Thorp. He took over his dad's business and operated it until 1989. Junior then sold cars for two years at Hofke's Chevrolet in Stanley, and then at Courtesy Ford in Thorp for a short time. His wife, Audrey, passed away on Sept. 5, 1992. He continued to live in Thorp until March 2010.

Junior was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church, the Thorp American Legion Post 118, served on the Thorp Fire Department for many years and had served on the city of Thorp Planning & Zoning Committee. When he was younger, Junior was a member of the Owen-Withee Bit & Spur Club with his Palomino horse named Trigger.

He had many interests, but especially enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife, Audrey; fishing, weekends at the hunting shack without a gun, snowmobiling and 4-wheeling.

Junior will be dearly missed by his three daughters, Barb (John) Hansen of Withee, Brenda (Scott) Layman of Chippewa Falls and Becky (Dan) Bieno of Chippewa Falls; five grandchildren, Christian, Gretta, Cory, Jerrad and Glenna; one brother, Richard (Sandra) Vander Hyden of Greenfield; one sister, Ann Lindstrom of Boyceville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; three infant sons, Bruce, Mark and Brian; one infant daughter, Beverly; one brother, Murvil Vander Hyden; and two sisters, Dorothy Carlson and Maisie Vander Hyden.
