Person, Roy Eugene (12 March 1927 - 11 October 2010) With Flag

 

Roy Eugene Person, age 83, of Thorp, WI passed away surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hope Hospice on Monday, October 11, 2010 at Miller Alternative Care Center, in Thorp, where he resided for about the past three weeks.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp, with Rev. Daniel Welch officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp, and also from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp. Burial will take place at East Thorp Village Cemetery, Thorp, Town of Withee, Clark County, where full military honors will be performed by the Thorp American Legion and Gilman VFW Clubs. 

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Chad and Kyle Vetterkind; Jeremy, Jed, and Jamison Szemraj; Jason Czubakowski; and Russell Person, Jr.

 

Roy was born on March 12, 1927, in Osseo, WI the son of John Arthur Person and Grace Ovedia Haughdal.  He attended Alma Center area schools.  Roy served in the U. S. Army from 1946 - 1947.  On September 2, 1950 Roy married Lucille Adela Schulz at Fall Creek, WI.  In 1960, Roy and Lucille moved to their current residence where they owned and operated a small hobby farm until his retirement.  She preceded him in death on April 12, 1993.  Roy also worked at various cheese factories as head cheese maker for 40 years.  He enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, his coffee clutch gatherings at the Thorp Dairy Bar and the Thorpedo.  Roy enjoyed going for drives and visiting his family.

 

On November 28, 1998, Roy married Shirley Swanson-Willison in Thorp.

 

Roy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp, Thorp American Legion and the Gilman VFW.

 

He is survived by: his wife, Shirley Person, of Thorp; children: Diane (Glen) Vetterkind of Thorp, Judy (Joe) Szemraj of Lublin, Jane (Dave) Metzke of Marshfield, Jeff Person of Thorp, Bonnie Haas of Chippewa Falls, Mike (Cherri) Person of Gilman; son-in-law, Larry Horgen of Thorp; step-children: Linda (Jerry) Fowler of IN, Kurt (Charlene) Willison of IL and Dan Willison of Medford; 40 grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two sisters: Myrtle Stenseth of Eau Claire, WI and Winnie (Buzz) Nelson of Onalaska; and one brother, Richard Person of Milaca, MN.

 

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his first wife; two daughters: Barbara Jean Person on November 18, 1967 and Donna Mae Horgen on June 1, 2010; two stepchildren: Mary Jaso and Alan Willison; two brothers: Alfred and Robert Person; and one sister, Verna Nelson. 

 

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Roy’s family to be designated at a later date.
