Smith, David (Achievement Award - 12 JUL 1952)

This week’s W. G. Skelly Agricultural Award will be presented to David Smith of Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.), on Saturday, July 12, 1952.  Mr. Smith began farming in 1913 with 80 acres in Clark County.  He now operates 280 acres and also takes an active interest in community affairs.  The award will be presented by personal representatives of W. G. Skelly at a breakfast celebration of the Smiths’ neighbors and friends.  It consists of a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, a gold lapel pen and a handsome scroll.

Born just one mile from his farm, David Smith is a native of Clark County.  He cultivates 200 of his 280 acres and is reported to be one of the first in his part of the county to adopt soil conservation practices.  Some of the land has been terraced and some pasture acreage renovated.  Chief cash income is from a herd of 35 Holstein cows, half of them pur bred, 8 Duroc brood sows, whose litter are sold as feeder pigs; and a flock of 350 white leghorns.  Canning peas are also raised as a cash crop.

The Smith farm has been operated as a partnership for the past four years, between David Smith and his son, Donald.  Their operation is both modern and efficient, and is reported to be quite successful.  Tehre are three other Smith Children - Harry, who has been in the Marines since 1948; Jane, who is now Mrs. Jack Bertz, and lives on an 80 acre farm nearby, and Lois, who husband is in Korea.  Both Donald and Harry wee Future Farmers in high school and Jane was in F.H.A. in school too.

In addition to his farming, Mr. Smith is a member of the Greenwood and Marshfield cooperatives, machinery and feed; and is on the board of the Loyal Livestock Shipping Association and the Nation Farm Loan Association.  Whenever he finds time from all these activities, he enjoys his favorite hobby - fishing.

Mrs. Smith, along with raising four children, has taken care of the garden, worked with the poultry flock and run the household
