Volovsek, John F. (16 JUL 1929 - 11 MAR 2011)

John F. Volovsek, 81, of Eagle Pass, Texas, formerly of Superior died Friday, March 11, 2011, in the Maverick Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a month-long battle with cancer.

John was born July 16, 1929, in Willard, Wis. He attended Greenwood High School, helped on the family farm, and worked with his brother in his brother’s cabinet shop mastering his carpentry skills. He joined the United States Army on May 24, 1951, serving in the Korean War as a radio operator and instructor until his honorable discharge on May 14, 1953. He then was a member of the United States Army Reserves until July 4, 1956. He married Arleen Wistrom on Aug. 22, 1953, in Marshfield, Wis. He moved his family to Superior in 1965 when he took the position of Head of Maintenance/Carpentry at the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. After suffering a stroke in 1990, John and his wife moved to New Braunfels, Texas, where they enjoyed the warmer weather and some traveling before the passing of his wife in 2001.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing, singing in the church choir, and spending time with his family. He had a kind heart and a great sense of humor and will be sadly missed by both friends and family alike.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anna Volovsek; his wife, Arleen; brothers Frank, Joe, Stanley, Alphonse and William; sisters, Ann (Sladich/Lohrman) and Mary (Staut) ; and grandson, Peter Susa.

He is survived by his daughters Brenda (Stephen) Paris of Carrizo Springs, Texas, Sandy (Bill) Susa of Alma Center, Wis., Carla (Bruce) LeForce of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Marcy (Jim) Hoeffling of Carlton, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and siblings Tony, Marge (Jeras) and Betty (Fraid) .

Services took place Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in New Braunfels, Texas, with the Zoeller Funeral Home assisting with arrangements.
