Shaffer, John F. (1868 - 1961)

 

John F. Shaffer, 93, a resident of the Owen Havenet Nursing Home, died of old age complications this week.

 

Born January 3, 1868, at Newton, Ia., he came to Clark County in 1911, and settled on a farm in the Town of Green Grove.  He farmed all his life until retirement.

 

He was married on April 4, 1900, to Ida Lee Ross, of Rock Island, I ll.  She died in 1940.

 

He was buried in Riverside Cemetery.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ralph Claybaugh of the Owen Congregational Church, September 10.

 

He is survived by a son, Edward, of Finland, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Hester Welker of Owen; and by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John Franklin Shaffer, a resident of this community for the past 50 years passed away quietly Friday at the Havenet Nursing Home, Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), where he had been a resident for the past several years.  His death was due to complications of old age.  Mr. Shaffer had attained the age of 93 years, 8 months and 5 days.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 10 from the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home.  Rev. Ralph Claybaugh of the Congregational Church, Owen, officiated, with burial being made in Riverside Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were Julius Johnson, Fred Hoeper, Otto Bublitz, Rheinholt Buss, James and Howard Devine.

 

Born Jan. 3, 1868, at Newton, Iowa, John Shaffer came to Clark County in 1911, first settling on a farm in the Town of Green Grove.  Three years later he moved to a farm at the east city limits of Owen, where he resided until his retirement to Owen.

 

On April 4, 1900, he and the late Ida Lee Ross exchanged wedding vows in a ceremony performed at Rock Island, Ill.  She preceded him in death, passing away in 1940.

 

He is survived by a son, Edward of Finland, Minnesota, and a daughter, Mrs. Hester Welker, Owen; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services with the Rev. P.D. Powe officiating were conducted Wednesday at two o’clock p.m. from the Griebenow-Weirich Funeral Parlors for Mrs. Ida Lee Schaffer, who passed away at her home Sunday, March 3, 1940, at the age of 68 years and 27 days.

 

Ida Lee Schaffer, nee Ida Lee Ross, was born in Rock Island Co., Ill., on Feb. 5, 1872, where she spent her early childhood and received her early education.

 

At the age of 18 she was united with the First Baptist Church at Andulusia, Ill., and has remained in that faith.

 

On April 10, 1901, she was united in marriage to her husband, John Franklin Schaffer.

 

Mrs. Schaffer was always at true hearted and lovable woman, whose company will be missed by her many friends.

 

She leaves to mourn her passing besides her many friends and relatives and her husband, two adopted children, Mrs. Verne Welker of Owen and Edward K. Schaffer of Finland, Minn.; also two sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Yearous of Darlington, and Mrs. Julia Agy of Reinbeck, Ia.; and two brothers, George M. Ross of Minneapolis, Minn., and Charles M. Ross of Grinnell, Ia., and three grandchildren.

*Ida was the daughter of John Henry Ross (26 May 1836 - 11 May 1913) who was born in Guisboro, Nova Scotia, Canada and Hester Ann Roberts (12 Dec 1844-7 Apr 1912) who entered this world as a Hoosier  in Terre Haute, Vigo, IN and left it in Grinnell, Poweshiek, IA.
