Poppe, Charles (13 MAY 1874 - 11 APR 1958)

Charles Poppe was the son of Ernst R. Poppe and his second wife, Barbara Elisabeth, nee Hassenpflug.  He was born May 13, 1874 in Sheboygan, Wis., during the period of three of four months that the family, then moving from Canada, lived there before settling down in Clark Co., Wis.

As his parents were Lutherans and accustomed to attending church, they also had Charles baptized, and he grew up as a member of the Lutheran faith.  Here in Clark County the parents had a big farm in what is now the Town of Longwood, and were members of the Reseburg Lutheran Church.

The deceased worked at times in northern Minnesota, and it was there he met and married Miss Carrie Davidson, with whom he lived happily until some three years ago, when she preceded him into eternity.

The union was not blessed with children, but the deceased took care, together with his wife, of many children of relatives, upon whom they bestowed the affection that was not granted them to give to children of their own.  Throughout his life, his genial nature made him beloved, especially by children, but he was held in equally high esteem by the older folks.

The deceased lived in the Old Folks Home in Greenwood following his wife’s death, but suffering several minor strokes recently, was brought to the Havenet Nursing Home at Owen, where he departed this life last Friday, April 11, 1958, at the ripe old age of 83 years, 11 months and 28 days.

Of the nine children of the Ernst R. Poppe family, there now remains only one, Henry Poppe of Withee, who was about two years younger than the departed.  He is also mourned by a large number of near relatives and many friends.

Rev. Theodore Predoehl officiated at services held Monday afternoon from the Hoeper and Kraut Mortuary, Owen.  Vocal numbers were rendered by Mrs. Edmund Lentz and burial was made at Riverside Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Arvid Gummerson, Frank Karye, Bill McNitt, Joe Wnukowski, John Ericksmoen and William Veurnik.  In charge of floral offerings were Nelda Lang, Bonnie Miller, Opal Martenson and Doreen Poppe.
