Silas H. Hyser is a retired farmer located in Rochelle.  He was born in Steuben, Oneida Co., N. Y., Aug. 25, 1830.  His parents were Adam and Lucy W. (Shepard) Hyser, natives of Herkimer Co., N. Y., and Connecticut respectively.  The father was of German descent and the mother of English parentage.  The father, Mr. Adam Hyser, came with his family to Illinois in 1870.  He has been previously engaged in farming in Oneida Co., N. Y., where he had lived 40 years.  In Illinois he lived with his children up to the date of his death, Oct. 28, 1872.  He was born Aug. 2, 1802.  The mother’s death occurred Jan 6, 1884.  She was born Dec. 1. 1808.

Our subject remained at home up to his 22d year, where he was engaged in carpenter work and that connected with his father’s farm.  He came to Illinois in 1854, and settled in Pine Rock Township(Ogle County, IL), where he purchased 200 acres on sections 13, 23 and 24.  To this land he has since added 633 acres, besides 80 acres which he has in Clay Co., Iowa.

When Mr. Hyser started in life he has but a five-ox team, and the farm first purchased was heavily wooded and required a great deal of patient labor to prepare it for crops.  This he broke up and rendered valuable, and still retains this place, and is a substantial and representative man.

He resided on the farm first purchased up to 1867, when he moved into Ashton and remained there a short time.  He then proceeded to farm in Flagg Township, where he remained up to 1880, and then came to Rochelle.  At this latter place he has two houses, one of which he rents.

Mr. Hyser was married in 1858, Sept. 20, to Miss Jenette Sluyter, a native of Steuben Co., N. Y., and a daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Rixford) Sluyter.  This family came to Illinois in June, 1854, and settled in New Milford, Winnebago County.  They had followed farming, and are now living in quiet retirement at Rockford.

Mr. and Mrs. Hyser have five children: Charles A., born Jan. 25, 1860; Lucy A., Dec. 20, 1862; Harriet I., May 14, 1864; William A., Aug. 19, 1865; Frederick H., Sept. 6, 1867.  Miss Lucy A. married John W. Cushman, of Sterling, Whiteside County.

Mr. Hyser by political persuasion is a Republican, and with his wife belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He has successfully held the office of Trustee and School Director.
