McCray, Fay E. (14 JUN 1882 - 28 SEP 1960)

Fay McCray, retired mail carrier and a pioneer resident of this community, died suddenly when stricken with a fatal heart attack late Wednesday evening of last week.

He and his son, Bernard, were driving home from eau Claire where they had been that afternoon on a business trip when he was stricken near Chippewa Falls.  He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the office of a Chippewa Falls doctor.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Congregational Church, Owen, with Rev. Ralph Claybaugh officiating.  Burial was made at Woodlawn Cemetery at Sparta.  Pallbearers were Orland Woodbeck, Newell Wilson, George Sorenson, Howell Stuve, William Janstsch, and Grant Herrick.

Fay Earl McCray was born June 14, 1882 at Cataract, Wis.  At the time of his death he had attained the age of 78 years, 3 months and 14 days.

On Sept. 9, 1905 he and Delia Britton were united in marriage in a ceremony performed at Withee (Clark Co., Wis.).  During his lifetime in this community he served for 43 years as rural mail carrier, retiring at the age of 70 in 1952.  Since that time he has absorbed his time by engaging in the junking business.

He was a charter member of the First Congregational Church of Owen and for many years was an active member in its choir, as well as in other church activities.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Bernard of Owen; two brothers, Archie of La Crosse, and Floyd of Portland, Oregon, and two sisters, Mrs. Maude Dawson and Mrs. Pearl Coon, both of Portland, Oregon.

A daughter, Ione, preceded him in death, passing away when six years of age.
