Greub, John Sr. (16 FEB 1867 - 28 FEB 1945)

John Greub Sr. was born in Lotzwil, Canton Berne, Switzerland on Feb. 16, 1867, and passed away at his home in Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.) on Feb. 28, 1945, at the age of 78 years and 12 days.

He came to America in 1888 at the age of about 21 years, settling first in Monroe.  On Sept. 22, 1892, he was united in marriage with Christina Weidman.  They located on a farm in Ciarno Township, near Monroe, and after a year moved to Alma, where Mr. Greub engaged in the cheesemaking business.  He then took up a homestead near Columbia (Clark Co., Wis.), where they lived for several years.  Later they moved to a farm west of Humbird, which was their home until they retired in 1922, and moved into the village, which was his home until his death.

One daughter, Mrs. Barbara Kneubuehl, preceded him in death on May 23, 1943.

Besides his faithful wife and companion of 53 years, he leaves to mourn his passing, four sons, John and Fred of Humbird; Carl of Greenwood; and William of Monroe; and two daughters, Mrs. Her Rieder, Rockford, Ill., and Mrs. Lloyd Staffon of Monroe.  There are also twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. Greub had many friends, all who knew him, knew him as a friend.  He was a faitful member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church for many years.  He was church treasurer for twenty-four years and a janitor for twelve years.  Both of these positions he filled in a most satisfactory manner.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, March 3rd, from the home, and at 2:00 at St. John’s Church.  The Rev. N.J. Dechant officiated.  Interment was in Mentor Cemetery.
