Shewczyk, Helen Wanda (19 April 1915 - 31 July 2011)

Helen Wanda (Kaczmarek) Shewczyk, age 96, passed away at The Homeplace in Stanley on Sunday, July 31, 2011.  She was the first tenant to move to this assisted living facility when it opened November 1, 2005.

She was born on April 19, 1915, to Albert and Magdalene (Wysacki) Kaczmarek in the Town of Roosevelt in Taylor County.  Helen married Steven Michael Shewczyk on November 15, 1941.  They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on November 15, 1991.

Helen grew to adulthood in the Lublin area. As a young woman she worked at Kinas Club 73 as a waitress. From 1950 until 1973, Steve and Helen farmed in the Bellinger area. After living a short time in Lublin, they moved to Stanley in 1973. Shortly thereafter, she began working in the kitchen at Victory Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home and retired in 1983. For the next 20 years, Helen made her home at 230 2nd Avenue in Stanley.  After selling her home, she moved to Sunset Homes and then in 2005 to the Homeplace of Stanley.  Helen was known for her smile and easy going disposition. She enjoyed embroidery work and completed a quilt in 2009, which was shown at the Stanley Sew and Sew Quilt Show on July 25 and 26, 2009.  Over the years she embroidered numerous tablecloths, napkins, dishtowels and pillow cases and was also known for making yarn covered clothes hangers.  She enjoyed her beloved polka music, attending dances and time spent with family and friends.  She especially enjoyed kidding with and teaching her caregivers Polish words.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kenneth, in infancy; and her husband, Steven, in 1993.  Also preceding her in death were brothers: Frank, Leon, Theodore, Zigmund, Stanley; a sister, Pearl Kinas; brother-in-laws: Frank, John and Harry Shewczyk; and sisters-in-law: Anna Fliegel and Anna Kaczmarek.

Helen is survived by her son, Richard (Kay Heim) Shewczyk of Naperville, IL; her daughter, Patricia (David) Jankoski of Stanley; and two grandchildren: Thomas Jankoski and Michelle (Bradley) Van Dinter.  Other survivors include sisters-in-law: Lil Kaczmarek of Thorp, Frances Kaczmarek of Chicago, Mary (Bob) Puariea of Stevens Point, Judy Shewczyk of Lublin, Pearl Daczyk of Milwaukee, and Patricia Shewczyk of Santa Barbara, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was a life time member of St. Mary of Assumption Polish National Catholic Church in Lublin.  Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s on Thursday, August 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. John Kutek officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.  Visitation was held on Wednesday from 4 - 7 p.m. at Plombon Funeral home in Stanley and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorials are requested to the Stanley Area Historical Society or St. Mary’s PNC Cemetery fund.
