Elizabeth G. McCarty, 90, formerly of Greenwood, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at St Mary’s Care Center, Madison. A private family burial was held at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Greenwood City Cemetery.

 

Elizabeth Gertrude McCarty was born on Oct. 29, 1920, in Greenwood, the daughter of Almon H. and Jessie B. (nee Barr) McCarty. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the Greenwood area and was a graduate of Greenwood High School. She served in the U.S. Naval Reserves in Long Beach, Calif., during World War ll, from1943-45. After her discharge she moved to Saginaw, Mich., and lived with her sister, Violet, and brother-in-law, Howard Farwell. She then attended Ferris State University and studied to be a pharmacist. After completing her studies, she worked at the State Hospital in Saginaw as a pharmacist for 15 years. She moved to Madison in 2003 and resided there until the time of her death. She was a member of the Wisconsin Genealogical Society, in which she was very active, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Ferris State University Alumni Association, the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. She had many interests, but especially loved studying and reading about Ireland and researching her heritage.

 

She is survived by two nieces, Andrea (Arlyn) McCarty Doern, Fond du Lac, and Debra (Peter) McCarty Julka, Madison, one nephew, Michael (Bonnie) McCarty, St. Louis, MO.; and other relatives and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Charlotte Thomley and Violet (Howard) Farwell; and three brothers, Allan (Edna Frances) McCarty, Justin (Myrtha) McCarty, and Vernon McCarty.
