Chili (21 April 1911)

The little baby of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Eibergen died suddenly Monday morning and was buried here in the Catholic Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

One day last week the house of Dick Mundt on his farm burned down right at noon. The fire was discovered by the neighbors, while VerKuylens who occupied the house were eating dinner.  When Mr. VerKuylen got on the roof to see where the fire was he broke through and had to climb out in a hurry to keep from being burned. The fire must have been smoldering a long time in the garret, it being airtight.  As soon as the opening was made by Mr. VerKuylen the house stood in flames and there was no thought of saving the house. VerKuylens saved most of their belongings and through hard work the rest of the buildings on the farm were saved. Dick Mundt is re-building the house and has lumber hauled on the place.  He gets about $500 insurance from the Lynn Fire Insurance Co. This will help to build up the house.

Mrs. Otto Walter will leave Friday with little Wilbur to join her husband who has a position at Freeport, Illinois.

The Easter services given at the M. E. Church here Easter Sunday evening were quite largely attended.

Mr. VerKuylen moved his family temporarily into the house recently built on the Simonds farm.

The Casey Brothers show presented here Monday evening was appreciated by a fair sized crowd.

Those who are going to plant potatoes this year ought to sort the seed before they plant, so that when digging time comes they have the different kinds separate and keep them separate.  The way a farmer brings potatoes now, you will find that 4 out of 5 have their potatoes all nicely mixed up.  There are red potatoes, early rose, early Ohio, Burbanks, green mountains and the rurals all peaceably together in one bunch.  When these potatoes arrive at the market, the buyers will not pay the best price. We can raise good potatoes in this country, but the growers ought to use a little care when planting and plant each kind by itself.
