Albert Porath had the misfortune of losing a cow early this week.

Emil and August Krause were Granton visitors Thursday.

Walter Moldenhauer spent Friday at Neillsville.

There was no school held here last Friday as the various teachers were attending teachers institute at Neillsville that day.

Raymond Smith and Leo Bentz visited with Bill Yankee on Sunday.

Emil Krause and family visited at Grandma Krause’s on Sunday.

"I am doing my best," good Biddy said to a neighbor o’er the way.

"I find a nest that suits my form,  and I lay an egg each day."

"But would you still do it?" the neighbor said, if your son they killed for a fry?

On Sunday morn when the sun shone bright on the block I saw him die."

Your son was a scrub, good Biddy said, and all he could do was crow;

He spent his days in the garden patch, and scratched the seed from the row.

"I’m laying an egg," good Biddy said, "For the food they gives me each day.;

And the farmer knows full well, does he, that I make the old farm pay."

If you do not believe the truth of this poen, please read what is said of the egg laying contest that has been carried on by the Connecticut Agricultural College during the past year.  The highest record was gained by a pen containing five white leghorn hens and a rooster, and was 1,071 eggs, or an average per hen of 215 for 365 days.  The pen of white Wyandottes came next with 1,069 eggs in the same time.  Wouldn’t a coop of such layers make "The old farm pay?"
