Churchill, James "Grandpa" (24 MAY 1837 - 25 MAY 1913)

"Grandpa" James Churchill answered his final summons at 3:15 o’clock Sunday morning, May 25, 1913.  Death resulted from heart trouble, from which he had long been a sufferer.

By his death the ranks of Granton’s worthy old people have suffered a serious loss.  Ten years ago Mr. Churchill came here from his birthplace, Brougham, Ont., Canada, and took up his residence with his daughter Sarah,  Mrs. P.J. Kemmeter, since which time we have enjoyed his acquaintance and found him endowed with a great gift of tenderness of heart for all matters concerning the public weal, as well as for all the varied interests of an ever widenging and dearly loved family circle.  Mr. Churchill was educated for the ministry but retired some twenty years ago.  He was at one time principal of schools in Canada, near Toronto, and these too at one time engaged in journalism.  At the time of his death he was 75 years, 11 months and 29 days old, having died the day before his 76th birthday.  The body, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. P.J. Kemmeter and his youngest son, Will, of Milwaukee, was taken aboard Monday night’s midnight train enroute to his birthplace at Brougham in Canada, where ti will be interred beside the body of his wife who died in 1877.  He is survived by six children, namely Dr. B.P. Churchill of Milwaukee, R.H. Churchill of Toronto, Canada, Mrs. R. Allin of Helena, Ark., Mrs. W.R.G. Phair of Boscombe, England, Mrs. P.J. Kemmeter of this place, and Will Churchill of Milwaukee, all of whom, with exception of Mrs. Phair of England, journeyed about at this time and attended the funeral of this fond parent.
