William Schmidt of Humbird

William Schmidt was, one of the pioneer settlers of Clark county. In 1871, purposing to operate a grist mill, he made his own lake for power. He and his helpers cut down the large pine trees and hewed out large timbers to make the dam. After the lake was formed he built his grist mill, and ground flour and feed on old-time mill stones. The farmers came from near and far with their grist. Farmers from the Neillsville area drove over one day and back the next. They had to bump over the rough corduroy road which connected Humbird and Neillsville. Presently Mr. Schmidt took a son-in-law into partnership, he being the father of the current Will Hein. In later years the mill was operated by Will Hein and his brother Oscar, deceased. Will Hein lives on the old mill site.
