Stiefvater, Bernard (28 Jan 1934-08 Feb 2012)

 

Bernard G. Stiefvater, 78, known to his friends as Steve and to his family as Buzz, Orinda, Calif., formerly of Greenwood, passed away in his home on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012. Memorial services were held in Californoa.

 

Bernard George Stiefvater was born on Jan. 28, 1934, near Greenwood, to George and Geneva (nee Kitzhaber) Stiefvater. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1957 with degrees in Spanish and accounting. He served in the Army for several years before beginning a 40 year career in the paper industry working primarily in sales. In his retirement years, Buzz was an avid hiker and member of several hiking groups including the Orinda Hiking Club. He was also an organizer of the OHC De Fencers, a group that worked to remove old barbed-wire fencing from Bay Area open spaces.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Anne (Michael) Murphy, Chico, Calif.; two sons, Mark Stiefvater, San Ramon, Calif., and Scott (Chialo) Stiefvater, Walnut Creek, Calif.; four grandchildren, Margaret and Matthew Murphy and Lainey and Owen Stiefvater; a sister, Janet (Don) Fiene, Adams; and a brother, Thomas Stiefvater, Ardale.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, 1506 Mendocino Dr. Concord, CA, 94521.
