Chili (29 December 1911)

Christmas has passed away again with all its joys and anticipation and blessed are those that rather give than to receive.

Our school district No. 1 enjoyed a program by the children under the governing care of Miss Vera Beeckler who worked hard to make it successful. The intention was to have a larger program and to have it in the hall, but the hall could not be had.

Miss Albrecht who is working for A. Hogenson spent Christmas with her folks and returned to work Tuesday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Hogenson had a little Christmas supper to which was invited Mr. and Mrs. John Fraser, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Henning and Mrs. Albert Degener and children. All had a good time.

Mrs. A. Verhagen who had been troubled with appendicitis for some years became quite sick very sudden last week and upon advice of Dr. Schwarz she went to Marshfield hospital where she was operated on successfully Friday afternoon. She seems to get along O. K.  Even though the mother was away, the neighbors’ helped so the Verhagen children had a Christmas celebration.

Miss Libby Bartell of Neillsville was visiting with her friend Vivian Degener a few days this week.

Gottlieb Bertschinger and family visited with his wife’s folks in town York Christmas Day. Gottlieb returned the same evening, but his wife and baby stayed a few days more.

It is a very bad time to talk in favor of public improvements at this time especially to those that have not paid yet, and there are generally quite a few that are a little late with paying.  But nevertheless if taxes go higher, what good is money if we don’t use it to accomplish something that is worth while, that will do some good for our children and incidentally for ourselves.  Give us teachers that make it their life’s business to teach, that have learned to teach when they start in.  In order to be able to get those teachers we ought to have a place where they can be instructed themselves.  Other counties have it, why should Clark County trail behind.

Don’t forget the dance at the M. W. A. Hall Monday night. A good time is guaranteed to all.
