These three O-W FFA members attended the National FFA Convention held in Kansas City Recently. Those attending were Mike Schrom, Loretta Nunamaker, and John Turner. Another delegate to the convention, Tammy Ackerman, was not available when a photograph was taken. John Turner is the current president of the O-W FFA Chapter, Loretta is the current secretary, and Tammy is treasurer of the chapter.

The Hillcrest Homemakers held their 25th Anniversary Dinner at Meadowview Country Club.

Larry Kadolph of Withee received the 50,000 Cow Club Award from Tri-State Breeders, Baraboo and Westby, Wisconsin, at a recent employee recognition banquet.

Kadolph has services over 50,000 first service cows in his career as a Tri-State technician.

David Gay was presented with two scholarships at a dinner held at the Left Guard, Eau Claire on November 27, 1978. He is in his third semester of a four semester course in Real Estate at the Eau Claire District I Technical Institute.

One scholarship was from the Wisconsin Real Estate Board and one from the Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls Board of Realtors. This is the first time both scholarships were received by the same person. Scholarships were based on Gay’s scholarship achievement, 3.87 out of a 4.00 point average, plus personal interviews, and staff recommendation.

Mr. gay is married and has two children. His wife Laurie also attends Eau Claire District I Tech School, studying to be a Medical Lab Technician.

Attending the dinner at the Left Guard were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gay and his wife, Laurie.

Joyce Worden, owner and operator of Joy’s Beauty Boutique, 118 N. Central Avenue in Owen is the recipient of an achievement award after completing studies at the Lyceum, the unique and world famous Advanced School of Cosmetology located at the offices of Jhirmack Enterprises, Inc., Redding, California. Jhirmack is the leader in the field of Scientific Education for progressive licensed cosmetologists and barber stylists.

The concentrate course included the study of the science of skin and hair, manufacturing permanent waving, hair coloring, and other subjects pertinent to the education of cosmetologists and their clients.

Zielinski, Emilia (Emma) (19 Oct 1889 – 27 Nov 1978)

Emilia (Emma) Zielinski, aged 89, died on November 27, 1978 at Stanley Memorial Hospital in Stanley from an apparent stroke with complications.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 30, 1978 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m., with Father Paul Officiating. Burial was in the Parish Cemetery in Lublin.

Pallbearers were Chester Kwiesielewicz, Ed Liszewski, Ted Popowski, Frank Spaeth, John J. Witer and Ray Popowski.

The former Emilia Nagorski was born on October 19, 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. She was married to John Zielinski on February 2, 1910 in Deer Lodge, Tennessee, and in 1911 moved with her husband to a farm near Lublin, then back to Chicago in 1920, and back to a farm near Withee in 1922. Since 1930 they lived at Route 1, Withee.

She is survived by sons, Joseph of Owen, Frank of Wayne, New Jersey, Stanley of Aurora, Illinois, Walter of Route 1, Withee, twin sons, Steve of LaGrange, Illinois, and Leon of Inverness, Florida; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Edmond, who died at age 13 in 1930, and a brother, William Palmer, and her husband.

Miss Laura Girard, age 76 of Owen, died at 11:41 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 1978 at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen, where she had been a resident for the past six years.

Funeral services were held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen on Wednesday, November 29th at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Richard L. Fliss, pastor, officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery, Withee.

Miss Girard was born June 2, 1902 in Odanah, Wisconsin. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ben (Alma) Metros of Chicago and Mrs. Elva Aimsworth of Peoria, Arizona. Two brothers and a sister predeceased her.

Vetterkind, Walter (4 Jan 1901 – 10 Dec 1978)

Walter E. Vetterkind, age 77, a former resident of Owen, from Route 3, New Auburn, Wisconsin, died on Sunday, December 10, 1978 at the Bloomer Hospital in Bloomer, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held at the Island Lake Church on Wednesday, December 13, 1978 at 2:00 p.m, with Clayton Gunn officiating. Interment was at the Island Lake Cemetery.

Walter E. Vetterkind was born on January 4, 1901 in Owen, Wisconsin to Charles and Ida Vetterkind, and he lived in the Owen and Thorp areas until 1934, when he moved to New Auburn, Wisconsin.

He was united in marriage to Helen Wingert on November 24, 1928 in Red Wing, Minnesota.

He is survived by his sons: Clifford of New Auburn, Gary of Eau Claire, Tracy of New Auburn, Lavern of New Auburn, and Jack of New Auburn; daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. Edward Keen) of Granville, Illinois, Donna (Mrs. George Nelson) of New Auburn, Mae (Mrs. Arlyn Frank) of Chippewa Falls, Darlene (Mrs. Fred Pearson Jr.) of Rockford, Illinois, June (Mrs. Darrel Davis) of Rockford, Illinois, and Connie (Mrs. Lyle Worthington) of Chippewa Falls; brothers, Earl of New Auburn, Elmer of Thorp; sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Elsie) Bobb of Thorp, Mrs. Otto (Leona) Klaar of Route 3, New Auburn, and Mrs. Lila Dearsall of Mt. Clement, Michigan; 23 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, sons Michael and Richard, a daughter, Virginia, and brothers, Bernard, Charles Rubin, and Harold.

Harvey Bettis, age 77, of Woodruff died at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 1978 at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen.

Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 8th at the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen, with Rev. Douglas Groenewold officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Bettis was born on May 6, 1901 in the Town of Arbor Vitae and he had farmed there.

He is survived by four sisters: Mrs. Earl (Estelle) Clark of Woodruff, Mrs. Kenneth (Viola) Blaisdell of Woodruff, Miss Joyce Bettis of Woodruff, and Mrs. Irma Mattke of Minocqua.
