FRED STURTZ


Greenwood Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Grace Methodist Church for Fred Sturtz, 84, former Greenwood, Clark County resident who died at his home in Sparta Monday morning, Feb. 28, 1949 after a short illness. The Rev. Lee H. Holmes will officiate at the services and burial will be made in Braun Settlement Cemetery.


The body will lie in state at the Schiller Funeral Home until the time of the services.


Fred Sturtz was born May 22, 1864 in Bedford, Pa. He was married to Rhoda Rollands in Bard, Pa., in 1882. She died May 10, 1922. In 1929 he married Weston Haefner at Owen.


After his first marriage he moved to Franklin Grove, Ill., where he lived until moving to Iowa in 1902. In 1907 he came to Clark County and settled on a farm in Braun Settlement, 7 miles northwest of Greenwood. Mr. Sturtz operated that farm for 46 years. Last October he moved to Sparta.


Surviving are his wife, two sons, James, Granton, and Howard, Loyal, and one brother, Henry, Maryland. Two brother and three sisters preceded him in death.
