Ketel, William (1845 - 25 Apr 1900)

William Ketel died at his home in the second ward (Neillsville, Clark County) about noon, Wednesday, April 25, 1900. Last fall he met with an accident while at his work that laid him up for some time, and from which he never recovered, as it resulted in quick consumption. Mr. Ketel was born in Germany about fifty-five years ago. He came to America 27 years ago, and after a short residence in Chicago, came to Neillsville, where he has ever since lived. He was a mason by trade, an industrious workman and respected citizen, being at the time of his death a member of the city council. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters. Three brothers survive him one living in Germany and two, August and Herman living in this city. The funeral will be held, Saturday, at the Lutheran Church.

Response

I suspect that William’s brother Herman May be the grandfather of Edwin William Ketel, Herman Ketel, Paul Ketel, and Gottlieb Martin Ketel, four brothers who lived in St Helens Oregon and Portland Oregon. Edwin’s son, Edwin Owen, was born in 1920, and his mother Margarite Madeline Thomas was the sister of my Grandmother, Mary R. Adams (Mrs Hugh P.) of Portland.

I believe Herman and Martin married sisters named Ackerman in Neillsville.

I am also aware of a William A. Ketel and a Thomas E. Ketel in the St Helens area after 1900; pretty sure they are related to the Edwins….

If you can add or comment, I’d much appreciate it.
