Benson, Mary E. (9 April 1876 - 19 January 1966)

 

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Georgas Funeral Home for Mrs. B. J. Benson, 89, of Neillsville, who died here January 19. The Rev. Oscar Nichols of the Methodist Church officiated.  Burial was made in Cedar Falls Cemetery, near Menomonie.

 

Mrs. Benson, the former Mary E. Downing, was born April 9, 1876, in Rusk. Her parents were the late Charles H. and Jean (Cameron) Downing.  On completing her education in Dunn County, Mrs. Benson taught school for six years.

 

On July 18, 1897, she was married to B. J. Benson in Eau Claire.  In 1940 they moved to Neillsville, where they operated a hardware store for several years.  She had been in poor health for the last four years.

 

She is survived by her husband; a sister, Mrs. W. W. (Jean) Rubyor of Rice Lake; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. 

 

People from out of town attending the service were: Mrs. Robert L. Summers of Portland, Ore.; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Rubyor of Rice Lake; Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Benson of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nooney and Mrs. Lillian Downing of Wheeler; Mr. and Mrs. David Danielson and A. Danielson of Loyal.

 

Pallbearers were: Donald W. Johnson, Glenn Roberts, Wayne Grap and Henry Thomsen.

 

"The Old Rugged Cross" was sung by Wilfred B. Galstad, accompanied by Mrs. Jas. A. Musil.
