“Up The Line”

A few brief sketches from our reporter’s note book. (Section 35)

Unity - Jackson & Buckstaff of Oshkosh are putting in a large Shingle mill.

Arriving at Unity we found it to be a thriving little town of about 30 houses. Spaulding & Co., of Black River, have a fine Saw & Shingle mill now in operation, a planer and matcher are to be put in right away.

Some parties are looking up a site for a stave Factory, and have already contracted with the settlers for stave bolts.

The town lays on the line between Clark & Marathon Co., the location is pleasant and the citizens are improving their places which gives it a very near appearance.

The want of a school house is felt very much here.

Mr. S. A. Cook, formerly of Fond du Lac, has a large Grocery & Dry Good Store, and gets a good trade from the settlers who are flocking in her very fast.

Spaulding & Co. also have a store; Palmer Kinney accommodates travelers at his hotel; there is an express office at this place.

The depot is at present about a mile from town, but it is to be removed to a more convenient distant towards town.

There is a good road running west to Loyal, Neillsville and Black River.

Doctors Wells and Stewart are the practicing Physicians of the place.

The merchants look for a nice little town.
