A special school meeting has been called for Thursday
evening, May 24th, 1917, at the Granton schoolhouse for the purpose of
discussing the problem of building an addition to the schoolhouse and voting on
the question whether or not we are to have a high school in the future.
The pupils now enrolled in the school number 160, and the rooms are crowded to
such an extent that the Industrial Commission has given the school board orders
to discontinue all grades beyond the 9th or create sufficient additional room
for their accommodation. Under these circumstances there is no other course for
the district to pursue than to enlarge the school building. In regard to
creating a high school department, we note that the sentiment is strongly in
favor of a high school. Probably no other village in the county is more
favorably situated than Granton to support a first class high school. With an
ever increasing number of graduates from this and surrounding school and with a
noticeable desire of the coming generation for higher education, Granton must
sooner or later give this matter serious thought. The people of this community
believe in being progressive in all ways, and we cannot afford to take a back
seat in school matters.
