Private funeral services are being held today (Thursday) from the Georgas Funeral Home for Carl R. Smith, 66, of Rt. 2, Neillsville who died Monday at his farm home in the Town of Pine Valley. Burial will be made in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.

He apparently had died of a gunshot wound. The body was found in a bed in the farm home about 7 a.m. Monday by Mrs. Smith. A .22 calibre rifle lay nearby. Coroner Robert Lulloff said Smith had taken his own life.

Mr. Smith was born March 2, 1901, in Jackson County. He attended schools there and did farm work. He had been a resident of Clark County since 1945, living first at Humbird and moving to the Neillsville area in 1950. For the last 10 years he had lived in Pine Valley.

Mr. Smith had been employed at Short’s Fur Farm until the first part of this year, retiring then due to poor health. He had been hospitalized recently and returned home, Friday prior to his death.

He was married November 24, 1927, to the former Esther Martin in Augusta.

Survivors include his wife; and six children: Earl of Neillsville, Carl Jr., of Vesper, Martin of Medford, Mrs. Ervin (Arlys) Knoop of Neillsville, Kenneth of Stevens Point and Gordon of Oshkosh. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Phillip (Alice) Livermore of Merrill, and Mrs. George (Cecelia) Gorkowski of Fairchild; a brother, Herman Smith of Fairchild; and 14 grandchildren.
