Butterfield, Dorothy Haas (13 OCT 1918 - 26 SEP 2006)

Dorothy Laura Butterfield, Wausau, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born in Thorp to Casper and Laura (Baures) Haas. She was the eldest of 11 children. She graduated from Thorp High School.

Dorothy and her husband, Kenneth E. Butterfield, were in the heating and air-conditioning business together for about 50 years. Before that time, Dorothy was a nurse at the former Memorial Hospital. Dorothy and her husband, Ken, spent the first years of their marriage in Thorp and later made Wausau their permanent home. Together, they built a successful heating and air-conditioning business known as Butterfield Refrigeration. Their business expanded to include a sheet metal fabrication division and a new corporation was formed called Butterfield Refrigeration, Heating and Sheet Metal Inc.

Over the course of her life, Dorothy was a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. She was an Elkette member of the Elks Lodge No. 248, a member of the Wausau Curling Club, president of the Parent Teachers Association of St. Mary's School and was active in many other community, charitable and religious organizations.

The many activities that Dorothy enjoyed included curling, bowling, gardening, cooking, sewing, fishing, golfing and ballroom dancing with her husband. She was an avid curler and led her women's team to capture the state championship in 1975. Dorothy and her family treasured the times they spent together at their cottage in Hazelhurst.

Dorothy is survived by three sons and two daughters, Jerry and his wife, Gloria, of Wausau, Eugene and his wife, Nancy, of Milwaukee, Ken and his fiancee, Crystal Hucke, of Stevens Point, Dianne and her husband, Greg Egan, of La Crosse, and Cindy and her husband, Doug Zastrow, of Wausau. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Henry (Marion) Haas, Casper (Loretta) Haas and David (Pauline) Haas, all of Thorp, and Dennis (Marcia) Haas, Darboy; three sisters, Elaine (Carl) Reynolds, Phoenix, and Bernice (Harvey) Seaman and Mildred Smith, both of Thorp; two sisters-in-law, Liz Haas and Kathy Haas, both of Thorp; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death one year ago by her beloved husband of 67 years, Kenneth E. Butterfield. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Casper and Laura (Bauers) Haas; her brothers, Edward and LaVern; and her sister, Alvera.

Private family services will be held at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Rev. William Grevatch will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wausau.
