Dallas was born August 4, 1844, the son of John & Clarissa (Beswick) Vernam. He was the youngest of their 7 children and his siblings were: Miles, Sally Ann, Marcus, George, Roxy Ann and John Henry. His half-sister, Esther Ann, was 5 yrs. younger.  He was married to Mary Jane Roberts 3 Jul 1866 at Warrensburg, NY.  He resided in Bolton for 6 yrs., when he moved his family west, settling in Clark Co. in the year 1872.  They had two daughters: Clarissa, who was named for Dallas' mother and died 31 Jan 1869 at 11 mo., and Carrie Bell (Mrs. Wilder L. Newell).  Dallas was a Civil War Veteran who enlisted in Co. H, NY 93rd Inf. Regt. as a Pvt. on 10 Nov 1861 for 3 yrs., and was discharged 12 Dec 1862, at Philadelphia by reason of Surgeon’s Certificate for disability.  He re-enlisted in Co. E. NY 142nd Inf., 1 Sep 1864 to serve a year, and was discharged 7 Jun 1865 at Raleigh, NC. 

 

In 1880, the Vernam family resided in Christie, sec. 11 of Weston Twp., with his closest neighbors being Robert Christie and E. L. Newton.  He later moved to Neillsville, where they lived for 25 yrs.  Dallas died 12 Jan 1908 at his home in Neillsville, at the age of 64 after suffering greatly for quite some time.  Rev. W. P. Burrows conducted the funeral in the home.  Dallas was a brother and neighbor of Roxy Ann (Thomas) Chadwick and a half-brother to Esther Ann (Hiram) Jebo of Tuppers Lake, NY.  Mary Jane passed away 11 Jul 1931 at the age of 81.  Both Dallas and Jane are buried in the Neillsville, WI City Cemetery

H. 93rd Regiment of New York Vol., which was enrolled on the 10th of Nov. 1861, for three years, and was discharged the 12th day of Dec. 1862, at Philadelphia by reason of Surgeon’s Certificate for disability. He re-enlisted in Co. E. 142nd Reg. Of infantry, New York Vol., which was enrolled on the 1st day of Sept. 1864, to serve one year, and was discharged on the 14th of June 1865 at Raleigh N.C.

Research Notes

 

Dallas' father, John Vernam was born 3 Jan 1805 and died 24 Mar 1877 in Clark Co., Wisconsin.  He was the son of Rufus Varnum (1784-1865) and Anna Pratt (1782-1865).
John first married Clarissa Beswick (1802-1848).  She died in Bolton, Warren, NY. They had seven children, the first one was born in 1827.  John subsequently married Esther and then Melinda.

Mrs. Mary Jane Vernum passed away at her home in Neillsville July 11, after a long illness.

Mary Jane Robberts was born Nov. 28, 1849, at Chester, Warren County, New York. She grew to womanhood there. On July 2, 1866, she was married to Dallas Vernum at Warrensburg. They came to Neillsville in 1871, and this has been her home since then. Mr. Vernum died many years ago. Mrs. Vernum was a lady of quiet manner, a lover of her home and the people about her, and had the friendship and esteem of all who knew her. She was a member of the Congregational church. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Newell; a daughter, Clarica died in infancy. She leaves also the following grandchildren: Mrs. Eva Marden and Cassius Newell in Neillsville; Mrs. Willis Enhelder and Mrs. Richard Bradley of Greenwood; Mrs. Ida Cunningham of Three Lakes, Wis., and Leo Newell who lives in the west.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.

Dallas M. Vernam passed away at his home in this city (Neillsville, Clark County) the 12th of January at the age of sixty three. He had been a great sufferer for some time, the cause of his death being a complication of diseases.

He enlisted in Co. H. 93rd Regiment of New York Vol., which was enrolled on the 10th of Nov. 1861, for three years, and was discharged the 12th day of Dec. 1862, at Philadelphia by reason of Surgeon’s Certificate for disability. He re-enlisted in Co. E. 142nd Reg. Of infantry, New York Vol., which was enrolled on the 1st day of Sept. 1864, to serve one year, and was discharged on the 14th of June 1865 at Raleigh N.C.

He was married to Miss Mary Roberts July 3rd, 1866 at Warrensburgh, N.Y. He resided in Bolton for six years, when he with his family moved west, coming to Clark Co. in the year of 1872, and has been a resident of Neillsville for twenty-five years.

He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. W.L. Newell of this city, and six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. T. Chadwick of Christie, and one half-sister, Mrs. H. Jebo of Tuppers Lake, N.Y. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, W.P. Burrows officiating. To the bereaved wife, daughter and her family are offered our sincere sympathy.

Died at the residence of Thomas Chadwick, Esq. On Saturday, March 24th, 1877, Mr. John Vernam, aged 72 years.

Mr. Vernam came from New York a few weeks ago to visit Mr. Vernam, his son, and Mrs. Thos. Chadwick, his daughter, who live in the Town of Weston. He left one daughter in the East. His wife and four children had passed on before. His funeral was attended at the Presbyterian Church of Neillsville, Clark County on Tuesday last. Very many friends and neighbors will be saddened at the news of his sudden death, and all sympathized deeply with the bereaved relatives.

Roxey Ann Vernum was born in Warren County, Pa., on March 1, 1837, died at the home of her son, Mark Chadwick on Tuesday evening, Sept. 7th, 1915. She was united in marriage to Thomas Chadwick and came to Clark County 43 years ago, settling on a farm west of the river. They lived there a short time and went to the present Chadwick home north of Christie, which remained their home until their death, Mr. Chadwick died in June 1911. Mrs. Chadwick is survived by one son, Mark, the daughter born to her having died some years ago.
