August Roeske of the Butler Settlement took four cows belonging to his brother-in-law, Mr. Chap, Monday morning, drove them to this city and sold them to John Stanton for $20 apiece.

Mr. Chap missed the cows and went to look for them. He tracked them down the road to the Shoemaker corner and noticed that the tracks led toward Greenwood. He got a neighbor to bring him to town Tuesday and here they made inquiries about the cows. They learned that Mr. Stanton had bought some cows Monday night. Mr. Stanton had the bows dehorned Tuesday and at firt Mr. Chap did not recognize them, but finally identified them as his ow. He then laid the matter before Deputy Sheriff Masters, who Got A. S. Armstrong and his auto to go out to look for Mr. Roeske.

Roeske had cashed the check for $80, which Mr. Stanton had given in payment for the cows, at the Big Store and stayed around town nearly all day Tuesday.

It was reported that he was seen on the West Side, out near the Stanton place, and upon going out there they met him coming toward town.

Mr. Masters asked him if he wanted to ride and he answered no, that he was going to town. He decided to ride however, when told that they were going to turn around and go back to town. When they got back to town Roeske started to get out but Masters deftly slipped the hand cuffs on his wrists and made him a prisoner.

The eighty dollars were found on him. He was taken to Neillsville that day, where he plead guilty and was bound over to the spring term of court.

Roeske has been living alone in the Butler settlement for some months. He has a family and Hancock, Wisconsin.
