Petranovich, Genevieve “Gen” (23 November 1934 – 11 January 2021)

Genevieve “Gen” Petranovich, 86, of Thorp, was called by our Lord at Turner Integrity Care, Thorp, on Monday, January 11, 2021 with family by her side.

Genevieve Josephine Lasiuk was born November 23, 1934, in Thorp, to Stanley and Josephine (Vieniasz) Lasiuk. She was united in marriage to James Martin Petranovich on June 11,1955. She and James lived on the family farm where she was born and raised. They continued farming there as they raised their family.

In her youth, Gen attended the Reseburg School by walking almost four miles each day. She then attended Thorp High School whose mascot, the Cardinal, became her favorite bird. After she and James married, Gen enjoyed raising her children. She was the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H leader for many years. She loved helping the children with 4-H projects and attended many 4-H events. She raised a variety of animals on the dairy farm, including peacocks and ducks. Gen also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, canning, sewing, and riding her ATV. She was proud of her Polish heritage, attended many polka dances, and loved listening to polka music.

Gen was involved in many organizations. She was strong in her Catholic faith and an active member of St. Bernard St. Hedwig Church and the Parish Council of Catholic Women. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and helped out during their many events. Gen also volunteered at the Faith in Action Caregiver program at Stanley Hospital from 1997 to 2010. She was a poll worker at the town hall, a cook’s helper at the Legion Hall and Quonset for their many events and volunteered for the fish fries at the church.

She is survived by her children: Wayne (Christina) Petranovich of Thorp, Shirley (Sterling) Wight of Baraboo, Sharon (Greg) Murphy of Thorp, Jeanne Petranovich of Seattle, WA, James (Juliane) Petranovich of Thorp, Roy (Holly) Petranovich of Stanley, and daughter-in-law Melissa Petranovich of Altoona; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Gen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother and sister-in-law: Richard and Maryann Lasiuk; sister and brother-in-law: Helene and Fred Opoka; and three children: Joyce (1957), Randall (1970), and Roger (2014).

Private family funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Church with visitation at 11am for immediate family. Services will be live-streamed, and a link will be provided the day of service.
