Bowen, Floyd D. (30 SEP 1914 - 24 APR 2002)

 

ABBOTSFORD - Floyd D. Bowen, 87, formerly of Curtiss, died at his Green Vista Apartment in Abbotsford on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, where he lived since June 2001.

Funeral services for Floyd will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Curtiss. Rev. Lauren Ley will officiate and burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, town of Mayville, Curtiss, with full military rites by the VFW Colby Post 2227. Pallbearers will be Paul Stasek, Emil Untiedt, Howard Frane, Dennis Bowen, Bob Bowen Jr., and Bryan Bowen.

Visitation with family and friends will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford.

Floyd Delos Bowen was born Sept. 30, 1914, in Crawford County to Harlow and Ethel (Smith) Bowen. He received his early education at Midway rural school, attended Curtiss 2-year high school, graduating from Madison East. He worked at the Drake Hotel in Chicago as a bell-hop. He then was employed with an international construction firm and was drafted into the U.S. Navy Sea Bees during World War II on Midway Island. He then served in Pearl Harbor where he assisted in recovery of the sunken battleships, USS California and USS Oklahoma.

Floyd and the former Phyllis Clara Blodgett were united in marriage on Nov. 6, 1948. Phyllis died March 15, 1990.

Floyd was employed with Mengel Road Construction working throughout the mid-west. He later moved to Owen and was employed with Foremost Foods. Moving to Curtiss, he worked in maintenance and with Bowen Hardware and Bowen Trucking.

Floyd was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church ELCA. He was a charter member since 1980 of the Curtiss Lion's Club where he served as Lion Tamer and a charter member since 1967 of the Boom-Town Snow-Chasers snowmobile club and served as trail boss for many years. He also was an active member of the VFW of Abbotsford. Floyd served as coordinator of the Curtiss Horseshoe league. Floyd was very active in the Curtiss community and enjoyed snowmobiling, gardening, playing cards with family and friends, deer hunting, and was a true Packer Backer.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Barbara Zimbal of Wausau and Shirley Cox of Arizona a sister, Loretta Leck of Vanderbilt, Pa. and two brothers, Lester (Hilda) Brown of Curtiss and Robert (Sherin) Bowen of Stevens Point and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his wife, Floyd was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Moore and two brothers, Donald Bowen and Millard Bowen.

A memorial will be established in his name by the family at a later date.
