Steinmetz, Violet M. (12 May 1924 - 4 Feb. 2008)

Violet M. Steinmetz, 83, of the Chippewa Manor Retirement Center, Chippewa Falls, and formerly of Park Falls, passed away on Mon., February 4, 2008, after a courageous battle with lung cancer at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

Violet was born on May 12, 1924, in Chetek, to Mertie (Tait) and Walter Jossi.

She graduated from Marshfield High School in 1942, and after graduation, went to work for the FBI in Washington D.C. during World War II. After the war she returned to Marshfield and married Harry D. Steinmetz on October 5, 1946. They had five daughters and moved to Park Falls, where they lived on Butternut Lake for 49 years. While in Park Falls, Vi was employed by the St. Croix Fishing Rod & Reel Company and the U.S. Forest Service-Chequamegon National Forest, retiring after 20 years of service. She was an avid Packer fan, fisherman, golfer, bowler, and downhill skier, participating in these activities until almost 80 years old. The highlight of her fishing career was on Father’s Day June 2003 at age 79 when she caught a 40- inch musky out of Butternut Lake.

In 2004 she and Harry moved to Chippewa Falls to assist Harry as his untiring primary caregiver in his battle with Alzheimer’s.

She is survived by four daughters: Lonnie (Tom) Thompson of Portage; Debra (Rick) Lambrecht of Chippewa Falls; Bonnie Watts of Boulder City, Nev.; and Connie (Kim) Salmon of Madison; son-in-law, Ronald Wood of Madison; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; daughter, Donna Wood; son-in-law, James Watts; her two sisters and parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Fri., February 8, at Chapel of the Resurrection in Chippewa Falls (Chippewa Manor Retirement and Rehabilitation Center, 222 Chapman Road). Rev. Edmund Doerre of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Chippewa Falls will be officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Chippewa Falls.

Friends may call one hour before the services at the Chapel of the Resurrection.

Horan Funeral Home, Chippewa Falls, WI is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Park Falls, WI, or the American Cancer Society.
