THOMAS E. WHITMAN, farmer. Sec. 17, P. O. Grand Rapids. Was born in Goshen, Orange Co., N. Y., March 24, 1824. He lived with his father in Goshen, in New Jersey, and then in Chemung Co., N. Y., until he was of age, when he went to Elmira to live, working at the carpenter's trade there for ten years; then he moved to Rudolph, Wis., and took up a farm. He now owns 240 acres on Secs. 16 and 17, Town 23, 6 east. When he came to Rudolph, there were but six families in the limits of the town. He was married, in Elmira, to Miss Jane VanEpes, of Homer, Cortland Co. They have five children — Edward L., Clara Isabel, Georgiana, Lewis E., and Frank A. He has served in several of the town offices, such as Town Superintendent, Town Clerk, member of Town Board, etc.
