Smith, Lydia J. (13 OCT 1851 – 14 OCT 1915)

(Note: some of the dates in this obit don’t line up with how long she lived in some of the places mentioned)

Lydia Jane Welsh was born in Iron Ridge, Dodge County, Wisconsin, October 12, 1851, and departed this life in Lakin Kansas October 14th, 1915, at the age of 64 years and 1 day. She was married twice, being married to J.H. Smith in 1881. They came to Caney, Kansas in 1896, having lived in the city of Lakin for more than twenty years. The immediate relatives who survive are her husband, her aged mother, one daughter, Mrs. Bruce Parker of Denver, Colorado, five sisters and four brothers, plus four grandchildren. Mrs. Smith will be greatly missed from the community in which she has lived so long. The house in which she lay when the death angel came last Thursday morning, had been her home for almost twenty-two years.

Mrs. Smith possessed an unusually large circle of friends, and the news of the distressing accident, in which she was knocked down and run over by a runaway horse, by which she met her death, cast a gloom over the entire community, as she knew almost everyone in and around Lakin, and many are the homes that have been cheered and helped by her tender ministries. The needs of the sick room always made a strong appeal to her, as did also the home stricken with sorrow, and may hearts are sad because of her untimely going; yet we realize that while our loss is great, her gain is infinitely greater.

Mrs. J.H Smith was the eldest daughter of the late William Welsh of Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.), and wife. She leaves to mourn her death, besides those mentioned above, her mother, Mrs. William Welsh, and five sisters and four brothers, who are: Mrs. Rhoda Flaherty of Loyal, Wis., Mrs. Carried Tomlinson of Raleigh, N.D., Mrs. Mary Vetter of Perkinstown, Wis., Mrs. Martha Catlin of the town of Sherman, Clark County, Mrs. Ellen McGee of Cottage Grove, Oregon, Grant Welsh of Loyal, Douglas Welsh at Washington, John Welsh at Perkinstown, Wis., George, welsh at Loyal, Wisconsin.
