Liebzeit, Bernelda B. "Bernie" (9 MAR 1921 – 14 SEP 2019)

Bernelda B. “Bernie” Liebzeit, 98, Greenwood, entered on her next journey the morning of Sept. 14, 2019, at Oakbrook Health & Rehab in Thorp. There will be a graveside ceremony held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 20, at Immanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery, in the town of Warner, rural Greenwood, with Rev. Asafa Rajaofera officiating. Following the ceremony, there will be a gathering of friends and family to celebrate the life of Bernie at Munson Bridge Winery in Withee.

Bernelda Bernice Humke was born on March 9, 1921, in the town of Warner, rural Greenwood, to Laura L. (nee Noah) Humke and Arthur T. Humke. She was raised on the family farm, attended Decker Grade School, and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1938. After high school, Bernie attended Central State Teachers College in Stevens Point, graduating in 1942 with a degree in education. From there, she went on to teach in the Greenwood school system. Upon returning to her hometown, she met the love of her life, Norman “Nubby” Liebzeit. They were united in marriage on Jan. 20, 1945, at St. Peter’s Evangelical & Reformed Church in New Albin, Iowa. They celebrated the arrival of their first child, Barbra Jean Liebzeit, on Oct. 31, 1949. Galen Lee Liebzeit followed on Jan. 7, 1952. Bernie and Nubby took over the Liebzeit family farm in a joint venture with his brother and his family. In 1946, after the death of Nubby’s father, Albert, they operated Warner Mutual Insurance, with his brother, Arvin, until retirement. Bernie had many interests, but especially enjoyed life and loved to travel, including out West and abroad. Her special passion was the moments spent with their grandchildren, Dustin, Kendal, and Blake.

She will be dearly missed by her son: Galen (Linda) Liebzeit of Thorp; three grandchildren: Dustin (Nancy) Liebzeit of Lublin, Kendal (Tyler) Patrie of Phillips, and Blake (Katie) Liebzeit of Greenwood; six great-grandchildren: Dakotah Patrie, Cooper Liebzeit, Kaleb Liebzeit, Landon Patrie, Karter Liebzeit, and Kaci Liebzeit; one brother: Eldore (Alice) Humke of Loyal; one sister-in-law: Ann Liebzeit of Marshfield; one son-in-law: Les Cohoon of Franklin Tenn.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, Laura and Arthur Humke; her husband, Norman, on Oct. 1, 2003; her daughter, Barbara Cohoon, on Aug. 6, 2012; one sister, Loriena Lindner; and one brother, Elmer Humke.
