Hawley, Clayton W. (27 May 1929 – 6 May 2009)

Clayton W. Hawley, 79, of Merrillan passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born May 27, 1929, in the Avon area, Jackson County, to Earl and Cynthia (Syverson) Hawley.

While growing up, Clayton had worked on the Prindle Farm in Alma Center for about seven years. He then worked for Nelson Muffler Plant in Black River Falls, for 17 years. During his time at the Muffler Plant, Clayton was united in marriage to Joyce Hostrawser in Augusta. Clayton also worked for Presto Industries in Eau Claire until it closed. Following Presto, Clayton started Grand Ole Builders, where he was the owner/operator since 1968.

Clayton was also very involved with the Assembly of God Church in Alma Center. He was the contractor that built it: he was also a deacon there for several years, a leader, Sunday school teacher and also a board member.

Clayton resided in Wrightsville, Plover, Black River Falls and Alma Center before settling in Merrillan in 1951.

He enjoyed hunting, especially hunting trips to Montana, working and his trips to Nashville, TN, and listening to country and gospel music.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Joyce; one daughter, Shelby (Vonnie) Hawley of Merrillan; sons, Clayton (Linda) Hawley, Jr. of Merrillan, Chuck (Pat) Hawley of Black River Falls, Allen (Theresa) Hawley of Merrillan, Robin (Judy) Hawley of Merrillan, Mick (Debbie) Hawley of Hixton and Jeff (Sue) Hawley of Winneconne; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; brother, Leonard (Betty) Hawley of Black River Falls; special nephew, Brook Flick of Merrillan; brothers-in-law, Allan Hostrawser of Black River Falls and Loyal Flick of Merrillan; and sisters-in-law, Barbara (Dale) Mills of La Crosse and Alice (Jim) Hall of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Cynthia; sister, Vera Flick.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 11, 2009; 11 a.m. at the Alma Center Assembly of God Church, Alma Center Reverend Greg Mandigo officiated. Burial followed in East Lawn Cemetery, Alma Center. Family and friends were invited for visitation Sunday, May 10, 2009, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Family and friends were also invited for visitation Monday, May 11, 2009, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Buswell Funeral Home of Black River Falls assisted the family with arrangements.
