Schopper, Mr./Mrs. Frank (Gold – Jun 1977)

Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Schopper, Dorchester, observed their golden wedding anniversary Sunday beginning at 2.P. memorial mass at St. Louis Catholic Church at Dorchester. Mrs. Schopper’s nephew, the Rev. Joseph Oertli, Omaha, Nebraska, celebrated the mass. Robert Kempf, Wausau, a grandson, was lector, and three grandsons, Patrick and Thomas Kirchele, Friendship, and Robert Kempf, Wausau, were mass servers.

About 150 persons attended the reception held in Memorial Hall following the church services.

Frank Shopper was born October 10, 1895, in the Town of Holton on the place where he still resides. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schopper.

Lucy Wagner was born December 21, 1902 at Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner. The couple was married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Milwaukee on June 29, 1927. Their attendants were: Agnes Wagner, the bride’s sister, and Joseph Gebert, Medford, cousin of the groom. Both attendants were present for the anniversary observance.

The couple has farmed the home place in the Town of Holton since their marriage. They have four daughters. They are Dale Elliott (Delores) , Chippewa Falls, Mrs. Jerome (May Ann) Reynolds, Dorchester, Mrs. Donald (Joan) Kempf, Wausau, and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Kirschele, Friendship. The four daughters were in charge of the anniversary observance Sunday. The Schoppers have 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Bauernschmidt, Betty (18 Apr 1905 – 21 Jun 1977)

Funeral services were held Friday at 1:30 pm. At Peace United Church of Christ at Dorchester for Mrs. Nick Bauernschmidt, 72. The Rev. Milton Petzold officiated and burial was in Dorchester Peace Cemetery. Pallbearers were: George Hargraves, Gerald Frey, Don Tischendorf, Marvin Tischendorf, Marvin Steevens and Mark Steevens. Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home at Dorchester was in charge. Mrs. Bauernschmidt died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield on Wednesday, after being admitted there on Monday.

The former Betty Zirngible was born April 18, 1905 in Nuremberg, Germany. She came to the United States in 1923 and resided in Sheboygan. On April 30, 1927 she married Nick Bauernschmidt at Milwaukee, where she was employed in a glove factory. They moved to the Town of Holton in June of 1967.

She was a member of Peace Church and the Women’s Guild, and also was a member of the County Line Homemakers Club.

Survivors include her husband and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Eleanor in September 1976.

Avila, Rita Ann (1 Jun 1977)

The marriage of Rita Ann Avila and Lt. Alan Mark Becker took place at the Air Force Academy Catholic Chapel in Colorado Springs. The Rev. William Dendinger and the Rev. Roman Kaiser officiated at the service on Wednesday, June 1, 1977, at 8:30 p.m.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Avila Jr., Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Becker, Route 1, Colby.

Maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Rebecca J. Tucker, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, Debbie Shute, Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Cathy Schwieso, Detroit, Michigan, Geri and Peggy Becker, Colby.

Best man was Lt. Andrew J. Szkotak, Syracuse, N.Y. Groomsmen were Lt. Alan Cave, Bay City, Michigan, Lt. Mark Sasser, Florida, John Becker, Beaver Dam, Bill Nietzel, Colby, and Michael Schmidt. The six saber bearers were Lt. Geoffrey Whisler, Lt. Steven Miller, Lt. Robert Eskridge, Lt. Anthony Grody, Lt. Monroe Ratchford, and Lt. Dewey Notoony.

Completing the wedding party were Rueben Scott, Colorado Springs, ring bearer, and Jodi Becker, Beaver Dam, flower girl.

Nuptial music was provided during the ceremony by Edmund Ladouccur, organist. Singers were Mike Byrd, Jerry Sink, and Joe Kaiser.

A floor length white silk organza gown was worn by the bride. The molded bodice featured a wedding ring neckline and was trimmed with Venice lace. The Bishop sleeves had hand sewn pearl beading. Her trail length mantilla veil was of imported French silk illusion.

Attendants wore yellow, aqua, and pink chiffon and lace gowns. They carried bouquets of yellow daisies, pink roses and aqua carnations. They wore flowers in their hair.

A 6:30 p.m. reception was held at the United States Air Force Academy.

Becker, a pilot for the U.S. Air Force, graduated in 1973 from Colby High School, and on June 1 from the Academy. The new Mrs. Becker, a teller for ENT Federal Credit Union, is a 1974 graduate of the Harrison High School in Colorado Springs.

After a wedding trip to California, the couple will be living at the Williams Air Force Base, Arizona.

An ivory floor length gown of quiana knit with a high fitted bodice, front and back tucks, and a gathered skirt with elbow length push-up sleeves, was born by Joyce Lenz, Colby, during her marriage to David Johnson, Schofield.

The Rev. Ted Jackson, Menomonie, performed the 12 noon ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church, Abbotsford, on Saturday, June 18, 1977.

Completing the bridal ensemble was a circular shoulder length veil attached to a band of flowers. She carried five red long stemmed roses.

Carol Oehmichen, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Lenore Johnson, another sister of the bride, Birmingham, Michigan, was a bridesmaid. Their blue and white flowered knit gowns were topstitched on the neck and sleeves. The fonts were gathered with self-tied end. Each carried a gathered bouquet of assorted garden flowers.

Mike Johnson, bride of the bridegroom, Schofield, was best man. Tom Johnson, another brother, was groomsman. Larry Johnson and Larry Oehmichen were ushers.

An informal reception and dinner followed on the church lawn.

The bride, a home economics instructor, is a graduate of Colby High School in 1972, and a 1976 graduate of UW-Stout. Johnson, a building trade instructor, is a 1976 graduate of UW-Stout also.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Milton Lenz, Route 2, Colby, and Mr. and Mrs. Allen Johnson, Schofield.

Rose A. Ellenbecker and Mark A. Schreiber were married Saturday, June 18, 1977 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby. The Rev. Frank Rushman performed the ceremony. Organist was Alois Gabriel, and soloist was Paula Kops.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Ellenbecker, Unity, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schreiber, Route 2, Clintonville.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a floor length white gown of sheer polyester organza trimmed with Cluny and cotton Venetian lace. Her polyester organza chapel length veil was trimmed with matching lace. She carried a bouquet of red roses and white baby’s breath.

Carmel Ellenbecker, Wisconsin Rapids, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Leonora Hardrath, Colby, and Mrs. Neil McNeill, sister of the groom.

They wore long red and white daisy dresses trimmed with crocheted lace, polyester cotton, voile and acetate taffeta line the groom’s bodice. They each carried a long stemmed red rose.

Best man for his brother was Roger Schreiber, Milwaukee. Groomsmen were Patrick Ellenbecker, Milwaukee, and Mike Piontek, Stratford. Ushers were Bernard Ellenbecker Jr., Stevens Point, and Mike Moynihan, Marshfield.

Flower girl was Heather McNeill, niece of the bridegroom, and ring bearer was Todd Ellenbecker, Stevens Point, nephew of the bride.

Supper was held in the church gym, with the reception and dance held at the Unity Memorial Hall.

The new Mrs. Schreiber graduated from Colby High School in 1970. Her husband graduated in 1961 from St. Phillips High School, Battle Creek, Michigan.

The couple is living in Bonduel, after a trip to Northern Wisconsin.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ridderbush, Route 1, Abbotsford, announce the engagement of their daughter, Pamela Jean, to Mark M. Brecke, son of Mrs. Myron Brecke, Route 1, Stetsonville.

Miss Ridderbush is a 1977 graduate of Abbotsford High School, and her fiancé graduated in 1976 from Medford High School and is employed at the Dorchester Co-op.

Plans are being made for a May 13, 1978 wedding.

An installation service was held Sunday morning at First Presbyterian Church, Abbotsford, for the Rev. Robert Everhard. Ministers taking part were the Rev. Edward George, Gleason; the Rev. Virgil Taylor, Marshfield; and the Rev. Thomas York, Wausau.

Ruling elders were Nels Anderson, Abbotsford, and Sarah Eagon, Stevens Point. Vocalists were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barkley, who sang “Whispering Hope”, and organist was Mrs. Gene Strathman.

The Rev. Everhard gave the benediction and introduced his family. A sandwich buffet and reception for the Rev. Everhard were held following the service.

The 85th birthday was celebrated for Emma Schultz in conjunction with a Father’s Day party at Green Vista on Monday afternoon. Mrs. Schultz furnished a special cake and ice cream and prizes for games. She was presented with a corsage of rose buds. There were 33 present.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lueth celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Saturday, June 25, 1977 at their home. The couple was married at Colby, June 25, 1927, and spent the entire time at farming.

They have 5 children, Courtland, Abbotsford, Carl, Colby, Gary, Unity, Mrs. Lenore Tyler, Big Sandy, Montana, and Mrs. Lorraine Banks, Lutz, Florida. There are four grandchildren, Stephanie and Jeffrey Banks, and Randall and Darla Tyler. The daughters were unable to be present for the occasion. One original attendant was present, Fielder Lueth, brother of Edward, was best man.


Edward Lueth was born Jun 4, 1905 at Stroh, Indiana. Mrs. Lueth, Ella Erickson, was born July 12, 1903, at Unity.

Guests present were from Spring Valley, Catawba, Stratford, Colby, Unity, Dorchester, Curtiss and Abbotsford.

The couple received congratulatory telephone calls from Massachusetts, Montana and Florida.

Yelke, Samuel W. (1892? – 30 May 1977)

Samuel W. Yelke, long time former resident of Colby, passed away May 30, 1977 at the home of his daughter Helen in Elmwood Park, Illinois, at the age of 85 years.

He was born in Germany and came to Colby as a young boy. He married Augusta Wucherpfennig in 1916.

He is survived by a son, Edward, of L Grange, Illinois; two daughters, Helen, Elmwood Park, Illinois, and Mrs. Robert Beaver (Mary), Lombard, Illinois, and six grandchildren.
