Before the days of refrigeration, it required long days of hard labor on the part of those who supplied Spencer with ice. For many winters, August and his sons delivered ice, which they got from an ice pond two miles east and a half mile south of Spencer, to town. The father got up at 3:30 a.m. to take care of his team before putting them through a long day of hard work, for they hauled five loads each day, no matter how long it took. They delivered to stores, taverns and butcher shops. The butcher shops needed the most ice and wanted it in larger blocks, some of them weighing as much as 480 pounds. Later the Milk Condensary and the fur farms bought ice.
