THE PIONEER HOUSE

Spencer, Wisconsin -- Oscar Lattin, Proprietor

Oscar Birdsey and Mary Isabelle, Lattin were among the earliest settlers of Spencer, Wisconsin. He was a native of Argyle, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin and she was born a Hoosier. It is believed Oscar arrived sometime in 1874. He later became the proprietor of the Pioneer House (pictured above) which was a Stage Office for Loyal, Neillsville, Black River Falls, and later had connections with the Wisconsin Central Railroad. Apparently their first two children died in the area. Less than 10 years later, they were living in South Dakota where their son Ira D. was born, September, 1885. By the time of the 1900 Census, they had moved further West and were living in Anaconda city, Deer Lodge, Montana.
