Westphal, William (15 OCT 1861 – 15 Jan 1916)

Wm. Westphal died last Saturday at the home of his daughter at Greenwood after a very brief illness, having been taken sick there but a couple days previously. He was born in Germany on Oct. 15, 1861, and came with his parents to America in 1869. He lived in New York for one year and then came to Clark County in 1870. He was united in marriage to Libbie Shummell on March 25, 1884, and five children were born to them. Mr. Westphal spent the earlier part of his young manhood in working in the woods and mills in this vicinity and worked for John Hines for many years. Later he engaged in farming and in 1901 he moved to his farm near Tioga which remained his home until his death. Mr. Westphal was a man of many excellent traits, was a good husband and father and was generally respected in the large circle of acquaintances in which [he] moved. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Elmer Stafford of Greenwood, Mrs. Lulu Flick of Tioga, Clause Westphal of Greenwood and Mina, who lives at home. A son, James, preceded his father in death. Deceased is also survived by his mother, one brother, five grandchildren. The funeral was held in this city yesterday, services being conducted at the Methodist church under the auspices of the Modern Woodmen.
