Guell, Corwin C. (Sells Practice - 1971)

Corwin C. Guell, Thorp attorney since 1934 and a former Clark County Assemblyman, this week announced that he is retiring from active private practice of law effective July 1.

He has sold his law practice in Thorp to the firm of Gay and Nafzger, which also maintains offices in Owen and Stanley. Robert Zeman, a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, will be in charge. Mr. Guell said he will maintain office space in the building until December 31, to enable him to complete pending legal matters.

In addition to his private law practice, Mr. Guell has been associated with the Thorp Finance Corporation for the last 37 years. With the exception of the founder, Francis J. Conway, he is the oldest employee of the Clark County based financial institution, holding a position for several years as legal vice-president.

Throughout his residence in Thorp, Mr. Guell has been active in church and civic affairs and in the political life of the community and the county. He served two terms as a member of the Clark County Board of Supervisors, as a directory of the Thorp School District for 20 years, was first president of the Thorp Businessmen’s club, was chairman and financial secretary of the Clark County Republican Club, was engaged in Boy Scout, Red Cross and other activities. He was also a member of the Clark County and the American Bar associations.

Mr. Guell said his plans for the future are indefinite, except that he intends to maintain his affiliation with Thorp Finance. He and Mrs. Guell are planning to spend next winter in Mesa, Ariz., and hope to make a trip to Alaska by way of the Alcan Highway next summer. Alaska is the only state of the 50 United States that he has not visited, he said.

Mr. Guell says that among his greatest satisfactions in the practice of law is the fact that he “never handled a divorce case,” and that he has “never regretted being allergic to alcohol.”
