She had only an eighth grade education but mastered the State of Wisconsin Assessorship exams and was an assessor for more than 20 years. Marie was an active participant in her life, with strong, independent ways and lived live by her own terms. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children: Shirley (Darrel) Shufelt of La Crosse, Steven (Bonnie) Pawelko of Rhinelander, Daniel (Monica) Pawelko of Marshfield and Diane (Neil) Ketterling of Lufkin, TX; six grandchildren: Doug Shufelt, Scott (Susan) Pawelko, Jennifer, Edward, Theresa (Brandon) Nelsestuen and Amy Pawelko; and great-grandchildren: Alex, Austin and Alyssa Shufelt.
