Marie was born on May 5, 1926 in Thorp, to Henry and Celia (Figura) Horban. As a child of the Great Depression, Marie grew up on her family farm in Clark County. Her strong work ethic came from her family's beliefs and she instilled that work ethic into her children and grandchildren.
Marie was united in marriage to Joseph Pawelko on June 5, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stanley. He died on November 24, 2007. They farmed the Pawelko farm at Diamond Lake near Lublin for over 60 years. Marie had many vocations during her lifetime, including wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, waitress, gardener, seamstress, Lublin 4-H organizer, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church choir director, Lublin Homemakers organizer and township assessors. She had only an eighth grade education but mastered the State of Wisconsin assessorship exams and was an assessor for more than 20 years.
Joe and Marie sold their family farm and moved to Marshfield.
Marie was an active participant in her life with her strong independent ways, who lived life by her own terms. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, Shirley (Darrel) Shufelt of La Crosse, Steven (Bonnie) Pawelko of Rhinelander, Daniel (Monica) Pawelko of Marshfield and Diane (Neil) Ketterling of Lufkin, TX; six grandchildren, Doug Shufelt, Scott (Susan) Pawelko, Jennifer, Edward, Theresa (Brandon) Nelsestuen and Amy Pawelko; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Austin and Alyssa Shufelt. She is further survived by two brothers, Pete (Rose) Horban of Pittsville and Mike Horban of Grants Pass, Ore.; and two sisters-in-law, Stella Horban of Tomahawk and Emily Horban of Stanley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; her grandson, Brian; three brothers, Walter, Sam and Joe Horban; and two sisters, Sophie Lockhart and Catherine Greenwalt.
