Kahn, Mary E. (? - 1984)

Mary E. Kahn, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Cernik of Neillsville, died October 22, in Lake Geneva. She had been ill for the past two weeks. She had been a Lake Geneva resident.

She is survived by her husband, Sydney Kahn; two brothers, Jerry Cernik of Neillsville and Charles Cernik of Eugene, Oregon; three sisters, Rose Sexton, of Lisle, Illinois, Sadie Roden of Chicago and Tillie Arenkiel of St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Attending the funeral services on October 25, were friends and relatives from Neillsville, Marshfield and Merrillan.

Geiger, Therese A. (8 October 1935 – 11 November 2023)

Therese A. Geiger, age 88, of Dorchester, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Marshfield Medical Center.

Therese was born on October 8, 1935, the daughter of Michael and Amelia (Lang) Geiger in the Town of Mayville on the family farm. She had various chores including working with the bovines. While in grade school, she sometimes stayed with her lonely grandmother and was happy to do so as it also got her out of milking cows.

At the age of 14, Therese entered a convent, School Sisters of St. Frances in Milwaukee. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Alverno College in Milwaukee and a Master’s Degree in Administration from DePaul University in Chicago. Therese taught grade school in Illinois from 1954-71 and then was principal in Illinois and Wisconsin from 1972-83. In 1983, she became the Education Coordinator in Middleton and worked at Land’s End in the phone center and training new employees until retiring. Therese moved back to Dorchester in 1990 where she was the Religious Education Coordinator for St. Louis in Dorchester, St. Bernard in Abbotsford and Holy Rosary in Owen. She also taught English to Priests when they arrived from other countries.

Therese was involved with many organizations including Principal Associations, board of trustees for JFK Prep High School and organizer and planner for many conventions and workshops. She also enjoyed designing and manufacturing garments for the Oncology Department at Marshfield Clinic, wove rugs and placemats, created a variety of crafts, liked to sew and made quilts for her family members. Most importantly, Therese loved her Lord, children of all ages, pizza and ice cream.
Therese is survived by her two siblings: Mark Geiger and Jane (Dick) Austin; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Geiger and Carol Geiger; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Elizabeth “Betty”; five siblings: Cyril, David, Norbert, Margaret (Donald) Peissig and Paul; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Geiger and Geraldine Geiger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Father Timothy Oudenhoven will officiate. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. The Rosary will be recited at 8:45 a.m.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Amy for her vigilance, companionship and generosity, the Marshfield Medical Staff for their compassionate care, Father Timothy Oudenhoven for his guidance and friendship and Jake, Tolea, Everly and Abner for bringing her joy and comfort.

Karl, Bradley Louis (10 May 1946 – 8 November 2023)

Bradley L. Karl, 77, of Neillsville, died on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Turner Integrity Care in Thorp.

Bradley Louis Karl was born on May 10, 1946, to Brookes and Lila (Knoop) Karl in Neillsville. He attended school in Neillsville, graduating from Neillsville High School in 1964. He moved out to West Virginia where he worked in road construction for a few years. He also spent many years at Figi's and finished working at Lynn Dairy.

Bradley was a little rough around the edges, but he had a heart of gold. He loved visiting his nieces and nephews and later his grandnieces and nephews. He loved to read paperback western novels and he collected scale model tractors. He used to walk to Kwik Trip almost every day for snacks and his Mello Yellow. He loved going to farm and model tractor shows.

He is survived by 2 brothers; Russell (Susie) Karl of Neillsville and Roger (Debbie) Karl of Weston, 2 nieces; Stacey (Daniel) Tull of Washburn and Shelly (David) Schutz of Neillsville, 2 nephews; Eric Sipes of Phoenix, AZ and Chad (Cassie) Karl of Wausau. He is further survived by grand nieces and nephews; Sierra (Noah) Osswald, Derrick (Jamie) Richard, Brendon Krueger, Kyle (Cat) Krueger, Alyvia Tull, Lilly, Lyla and Piper Schutz, Briella Siriani, Walter Osswald, Ava Richard and Maverick Karl. He is also survived by numerous cousins.

Our family would like to thank Bradley's guardian, Beverly Laski, for her compassionate care of Bradley for the last 2 years. Thank you for being there. We'd also like to thank Amber Vine and her Kwik Trip crew for the kindness they showed him. Special thanks to Tim & Lori at Gesche's for their always professional, compassionate care.

Pietenpol, Isabelle (15 May 1909 – 12 November 1984)

Mrs. Bernard (Isabelle) Pietenpol, 75, of Marshfield died on Monday morning, November 12, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

The deceased (nee Isabelle Helwig) was born on May 15, 1909, in Rome, Wisconsin. On June 30, 1930, she married Bernard Pietenpol in Winona, Minnesota, ceremonies.

She attended Lake Mills and Neillsville schools. As a young woman, she was employed as a stenographer for a Neillsville attorney until 1930. After her marriage, the couple lived in Granton, Milwaukee and Neillsville before retiring in 1977 and moving to Arizona. In May of 1983, the couple moved to Marshfield. She was a member of the Missionary Alliance congregation.

Surviving her, besides her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Joan) Tibbett of Neillsville and Mrs. Darryl (Nancy) Booth of Marshfield; and two sons, Daniel of Norfolk, Virginia, and David of Altoona. Joining them is a sister, Lottie Anderson, Richland Center; 13 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. .

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, November 14, from the Alliance Missionary Church in Marshfield with the Rev. Dean Morin officiating. Burial was made in the Windfall Cemetery, Granton. Pallbearers were James Smagacz, Dwayne Booth, Thomas Tibbett, John Tibbett, Michael Pietenpol and John Pietenpol.

Salisbury, Clarence H. (30 May 1899 – 12 November 1984)

Clarence H. Salisbury, 95, died in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Monday evening, November 12. He has been a resident of Memorial Home for the past few years.

The deceased was born on May 30, 1889, in the Neillsville area to William and Nettie (Cox) Salisbury. He received his education in local schools and then farmed for several years. He later moved to the Chippewa Falls area where he was employed. He later returned to Neillsville and after his retirement became a Green Thumb worker.

Salisbury was married twice. His first was to Bernice Wessenberger. His second was to Ellen A. Darling in 1962 Neillsville ceremonies.

Surviving him are three sons, William of California and Douglas and James, both of Wisconsin; and six daughters, Geneva Doday of Missouri, Ella Yilek of Alaska, Frances Patschull of California, Winnie Johnson and Dorothy Salisbury, both of Wisconsin, and Shirley, address unknown. Joining them is a stepson, Earl Darling, Neillsville; a sister, Elsie Ulirsch, Milwaukee, 14 grandchildren; and 17 Step- grandchildren, plus many great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by both of his wives, a son, Herbert, two sisters, Carol and Florence; and two brothers, Theron and Raymond.

Funeral services were to be held this afternoon (Thursday, November 15) at 1:30 p.m. from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. The Rev. Howard Ott of the United Methodist Church was to officiate, with burial made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. (The body was to lie in state on Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.)

Stelloh, Clarence W. (22 Apr 1907 – 5 November 1984)

Clarence W. Stelloh passed away on November 5 at his residence in Shorewood.

He was born in 1907 in Neillsville and attended local schools. He later attended an engineering school and then had his own business in Milwaukee. He took care of the sound engineering for “Music Under the Stars” at Washington Park in Milwaukee every summer.

In 1941, he was married to Georgianna Grosneck. They had two sons, Frank and Tom. His wife died in 1956 and later his son Tom died.

Survivors include a son, Frank, Brookfield; and five grandchildren. Joining them are three sisters, Mrs. Elroy (Florence) Thiel of Marshfield and Mrs. Thad (Lorraine) Zajac of Neillsville and Mrs. H. V. (Mercedes) Ballam of Whitefish Bay.

After the services at Milwaukee, interment was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Strangfeld, Peter P. (7 September 1907 – 9 November 1984)

Mr. Strangfeld, 77, died in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Friday morning, November 9.

The deceased was born on September 7, 1907, in the Town of Washburn to Lucas and Caroline (Schepp) Strangfeld. He received his education at Uncle Sam School in the Town of Weston and then farmed with his parents and did carpenter work for several years.

On October 6, 1932, he married Pauline Tomlinson in Neillsville ceremonies. The couple farmed in the Town of Weston until 1950 when they moved to the Town of Seif. The farmed there until retiring in 1972. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Globe.

Surviving him besides his wife, are four sons, Robert of Kenosha, Arnold of Nekoosa and Byrl and Louis, both of Neillsville; and twelve grandchildren. They are joined by two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert (Katie) Gibeau of Jackson, California, and Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Allieter of Carlton, Minnesota; and two brothers John and William, both of Neillsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Frank; and two granddaughters, Belinda and Lynette.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, November 12, for Peter P. Strangfeld. The Rev. Ralph Stuebs officiated at the Immanuel Lutheran Church ceremonies at Globe. Burial was made in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Forest Klueckmann, George Bordon, Ervin Martin, Hans Kalsow and Leo and Herman Hemp. Music for the service was offered by Karen Hoppa. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville was in charge of arrangements.

Welsh, Francis (? - 1984)

Francis Welsh, 70, of Florida died on September 30.

He was a native of Neillsville and resident of Stuart, Florida, for ten years. He was a veteran of World War II, the VFW and the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving him is his wife, Bernice, two sons, Michael of Miami and John of Denver, Colorado; a sister Genevieve Wesley, Englewood, Florida, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Florida.

Wendt, Diane (28 February 1946 – 13 November 1984)

Mrs. Dennis M. Wendt, 38, of Rt. 1 Owen, died on November 13 in St. Joseph’s Hospice Unit, Marshfield.

Mrs. Wendt, the former Diane Wirtala, was the daughter of William and Vendla (Ranta) Wirtala. She was born February 28, 1946, in Greenwood and graduated in 1964 from Owen High School. In 1967, she graduated from UW-Eau Claire. She was married to Dennis Wendt on August 12, 1967, in Greenwood.

She taught chemistry and science at Greenwood High School from 1967 through 1976. The couple also famed in the Town of Longwood. Mrs. Wendt was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Greenwood and was church organist for many years.

Surviving her besides her husband are three children, Darrin, Julie and Lisa, all at home, her mother, Thorp; a sister, Carol Wirtala, Milwaukee, and six brothers. Bill of Greenwood, Ed of La Crosse, Dave of Roanoke, Texas, Nick of Curtiss, Mike of Thorp and Chuck of Withee. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Lois.

Services were held November 17 from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Greenwood. The Rev. Richard Sorenson officiated. Pallbearers were Richard Olson, Duane Olson, Melvin Niemi, David Friske, Jeffrey Karlen and Wayne Nielsen. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery, Withee. The Maurina Funeral Home in Owen was in charge of arrangements.

Wiater, Leonard (19 June 1934 - ? November 1984)

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, November 19, for Leonard Wiater, 50. The Rev., Mark Voll of the Neillsville United Church of Christ officiated at the Gesche Funeral Home service. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

The deceased was born on June 19, 1934, in Chicago to Frank and Charolette (Stus) Wiater. As a young boy, had moved with his parents to Clark County and lived for many years in the Town of Seif. He was a resident of the Clark County Health Care Center at Owen for many years. About three years ago he became a resident of the Dunn County Health Care Center at Menomonie. He died at the Menomonie facility.

Surviving him are five sisters, Mrs. Wilfred (Caroline) Palms of Neillsville, Mary Ann Ormond of Marshfield, Christine Ormond of Wausau, Frances Kleszski and Patricia both of Appleton; and five brothers, George of Waukegan, Illinois, Cyril and Chester, both of Marshfield, Anthony of Owen and Eugene of Chili. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Micke, Rose Marie (18 April 1935 – 10 November 2023)

Rose M. Micke, age 88, of Stanley, passed away at Colonial Health & Rehab, in Colby, on Friday, November 10, 2023.

Rose Marie Crowley was born on April 18, 1935, in Owen, to Patrick and Olga M. (Christiansen) Crowley. She was raised and received her education in Owen, graduating from Owen High School in 1953. Rose then attended technical school in Milwaukee, taking classes in business. She returned to Owen and worked at Master Packaging as the shipping clerk. Rose was united in marriage on August 25, 1955, to William G. "Bill" Micke, Jr. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Owen. They farmed with Bill's parents until eventually taking over the farm. Rose also worked as the office clerk for Midwest Live stock, and for Roger Hoffman at General Business Services, both in Thorp, while working alongside her husband on the farm. They were blessed with two sons who joined them on the farm, and they were later able to purchase five more surrounding farms. The original farm has been in the family for 125 years, with her grandchildren making it a 5th generation farm.

She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church and its PCCW, and was the election clerk for the Town of Worden and the sewing leader for the Busy Bee 4-H Club, both for many years.

Rose had many interests, but especially enjoyed quilting, bowling, genealogy, and visiting with her friends Shirley and Joan. Bill and Rose made many trips out West to visit friends, attend cowboy poetry performances, and visit auction barns along the way.

She will be dearly missed by her sons: Dean Micke of Stanley, Allen (Lisa) Micke of Boyd; four grandchildren: Jessica Ryba of Cadott, Andrew (Melissa) Micke, Jennifer Micke and Ryan Micke, all of Boyd; five great-grandchildren: Aiden and Addison of Cadott, Elizabeth, Isabel and Eleanor of Thorp; one cousin: Berna Croco of Lebanon, OR; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, on December 5, 2016; one brother: John Crowley; one half-brother: Carl Larson; one stepbrother: James Crowley; and one stepsister: Alice Kirkpatrick.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday November 21, 2023, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church, in Thorp. Rev. Stanley Michael Antony will officiate, and burial will follow in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church, on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
