Wagner, William S. (4 NOV 1896 – 1 MAR 1966)

William S. Wagner, 69, long time publisher of the Thorp Courier, died of cancer at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield.

Mr. Wagner also served about 34 years as postmaster of Thorp prior to his retirement in 1957.

Born Nov. 4, 1896 in Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), he was associated with the newspaper all of his life. His father, William, founded the business in 1883. At the time of his death, Mr. Wagner was partner in the newspaper with with his son-in-law, Jack LaGasse, plant superintendent, and Robert E. Elkins, editor.

Mr. Wagner was a graduate of the Thorp High School and a veteran of service in the Navy during World War I. For many years he was active in the Thorp Masonic Lodge and the Cecil Tormey American Legion Post.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; one daughter, Mrs. LaGasse, Thorp; and two sons, Richard, Lafayette, Ind,. and William D., Bowling Green, Ohio, both working on advanced degrees in universities.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Thorp Funeral Home, with Rev. Roy Scott officiating. Burial will be in the East Thorp Cemetery.
