Hilt, William P. (28 SEP 1894 – 04 NOV 1967)

William P. Hilt, one of Owen's (Clark Co., Wis.) first businessmen, and a resident here since 1913, passed away Saturday afternoon at 3:30 at St. Joseph's Hospital at Marshfield, where he had been taken that forenoon in the city ambulance. He had been in poor health in recent months and returned home Tuesday of the previous week form Merrill, where he had undergone surgery. His death was attributed to a coronary attack.

A requiem Mass was said at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, with Father H.L. Crubel officiating. Burial was made at Riverside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Neal Laine, Cornelius Driscoll, H.B. Mauel Sr., John Bacon, Edgar Schulze and W.K. Doonan..

William P. Hilt, 83, was born September 28, 1894 at Chilton, where he was educated, and then attended Elgin Watchmakers College, Elgin, Illinois. He later moved to Owen where he operated a jewelry store for 37 years prior to his retirement. He was an active parishioner in the Catholic Church, being the last remaining charter founder of the Holy Rosary Church here, and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He also served one year as city alderman, and when time allowed, enjoyed himself most with fishing and hunting.

On June 5, 1920, he and the former Katherine Dilling were wed at Fond du Lac. She mourns his passing, as does his son, Dr. W.P. Hilt, Merrill; four sisters, Mrs. Martin (Rose) Nelson, Fond du Lac; Mrs. John (Linda) Scheer, Oshkosh; Mrs. Adolph (Minnie) Luck, and Mrs. Fred (Mayme) Sauer, Milwaukee; and two granddaughters.
