Soli, Victor (16 JAN 1865 - 1 MAY 1944)

     Victor Soli (1865-1943)

Retired lumberman and industrialist, Victor Soli, 79, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hjalmar Brandsness, here, Monday morning, May 1st, 1944, of a heart attack. Surviving his wife by less than six months, she having died Nov. 14th, 1943.

Victor Soli was born Jan. 16th, 1865 in Norway. He emigrated to America in 1883 at the age of eighteen years. Answering the call of a true lumberman, he settled at Porters Mills, Eau Claire County, Wis., where he took an active part in converting Wisconsin’s golden wealth, her mighty pines, into lumber.

In 1899 he moved to Stanley, where he lived for twenty-four years, engaged in lumbering and farming. Mr. Soli was in the employ of the Nye, Lusk and Hudson firm of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), as lumber grader and yard boss for a number of years prior to his family moving here in 1923, where he remained up to the time of his death. Mr. Soli organized the Thorp Lumber Co. in this village and was the head of that going concern for many years. He was active in civic affairs and served on the village council for a long term.

He enjoyed the love and respect of a wide acquaintance both in the City of Stanley and Village of Thorp. He lived an industrious, useful life an example of honesty and integrity, untouched by the mad speed and turmoil of the times truly a "solid citizen."

Funeral services were held at the Thorp Funeral Home on May 5th at 11:00 o’clock in the forenoon and later the remains were taken to Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Stanley, there, laid in state until 2:00 o’clock when funeral services were continued, the Rev. Midtlein and Rev. Sprengler conducting. Interment took place at the North Side Cemetery, Stanley. Three of Victor Soli’s brothers acted as pallbearers: Otto Soli, Arnt Warner and Herman Warner, Oscar Soli, Louis Soli and Julius Soli assisting. Thus Victor Soli was laid to rest in compliance with the ritual of his church, the church which he had served so faithfully and well during life.

Remaining to mourn his passing are seven children, Gustave A. Soli of Fort Williams, Ontario, Canada; Mrs. I.G. Olson, St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. H.E. Brandsness, Thorp, Wis.; Thorp, Wis.; Hans Soli, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; Mrs. J.E. Cassell, Oteen, N.C.; Henry Soli, Fargo, N.D.; Conrad A. Soli, Thorp, Wis. Besides eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild there are three brothers, Arnt and Otto of Stanley, and Herman Warner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
