The carrier returned to the U.S. in May. Prior to that she operated on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. She was also part of a task force which steamed into the Sea of Japan after a U.S. Navy plane had been shot down.

Since returning to the U.S. the carrier has been undergoing overhaul at a shipyard in San Francisco. She is currently undergoing carrier qualifications prior to her deployment this fall.
