Richard "Dick" Gene Elwood, age 75, from Weyerhaeuser, passed away at the Atrium Center in Chetek under the care of Mayo Hospice on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 after an ongoing struggle with heart and kidney disease.

Richard was born on Oct. 6, 1942 in the town of Sumner to Anna (Kawa) and Harold Elwood. He grew up in the Weyerhaeuser area and graduated from Weyerhaeuser High School in 1960.

He worked in the construction industry for a few years before being drafted in the U.S. Army. He served 14 months on the DMZ in Korea, where he earned many medals and awards. Upon his return from Korea he worked at various jobs until he found his true calling working for the local telephone company where he worked until his retirement in 2005.

Richard was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's in Bruce. He was also a member of the Men's Lodge at SS. Peter & Paul in Weyerhaeuser where he was a lifetime member. He was very involved with the VFW. He was the Commander of Post 5780 in Weyerhaeuser for 13 years and 10th District Commander for four years. He served in many other positions. Whenever they (VFW) needed help with something he was willing to help. He also was Vice President of the 13th Engineers.

Richard loved to cook, especially pancakes and it didn't matter if it was for a VFW fundraiser or for family and friends. Going for drives to "look things over" and trips to a casino were always a good time.

In April 1990, he married Diane (Wierzba) Silvernail. He is survived by his wife Diane; his step-son, Ken (Jodi) Silvernail; two very special grandkids, Jayton and LaBrya; a sister, Barbara (Jerry) Prorok; sisters-in-law, Donna Elwood, and Karen (Rod) Thompson; his brother-in-law, David (Lynne) Wierzba; his mother-in-law, Gen Wierzba; his nieces, Jill, Ami, Kim and Valerie and his nephews, Rick, Tony, Jason and Troy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Larry, Dale and Dean and his father-in-law, Mike Wierzba.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11 at SS. Peter & Paul Church in Weyerhaeuser with Fr. Inna Pothireddy officiating.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Nash-Jackan Funeral Home in Bruce where a Scripture Service will be held at p.m. There will also be an hour of visitation starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
