Abrahamson, Avis Arlene (3 March 1922 – 9 February 2018)

Avis Abrahamson, 95, formerly of Fairchild, died peacefully in the caring hands of Mayo Hospice and Augusta Nursing Home Friday morning, Feb. 9, 2018.

Avis Arlene Abrahamson, daughter of Robert and Elsie (Ames) Wampole, was born March 3, 1922, in Garfield Township, Jackson County. She was raised in the Fairchild area and made the village of Fairchild her home for her entire adult life. Avis was united in marriage to Edwin R. Abrahamson Sept. 26, 1942. They were immediately separated by WWII. Avis gave to the war effort by working in Baraboo at the munitions plant as a child caretaker for children of the workers. Upon Edwin’s return from the war, they moved into Edwin’s grandparents homestead in Fairchild and remained there all their married life. After her beloved Edwin passed away Nov. 3, 1993, Avis resided in an apartment in Fairchild. Later, she became one of the first residents to move into the remodeled Fairchild Nursing Home apartments. She enjoyed her life there, including numerous friendships and social activities. A hip fracture necessitated a move to the Clairemont Nursing Home in Eau Claire and later Country Terrace Assisted Living in Altoona. Two years ago, Avis moved to the newly opened Silver Leaf Assisted Living in Augusta. There her favorite pastimes were reading, cards and Bingo. Frequent visitors were her biggest joy.

Avis’ life revolved around her husband, children and extended family. She gave back to her community as an active member of the Women’s Fellowship Club of the United Methodist Church, the Neighborhood Birthday Club, the Fairchild American Legion Auxiliary and the Fairchild Village Election Board.

Avis took much pride and pleasure in her family and extended family; being a mother, grandmother and aunt to so many. She will be remembered for her enduring concern of others and for her marvelous cinnamon rolls, roast beef, chocolate cake and strawberry shortcake.

Avis will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kaylene and Larry De Longe of Wauwatosa; two sons, Dennis and Sherry Abrahamson of Raymore, MO, and Dale and Renee Abrahamson of Fairchild; seven grandchildren: Katrina (Matt) Klatt, Justin (Kari) Abrahamson, Eric (Erica) Abrahamson, Sarah (Luke) Denger, Alina (Scott) McGinn, L. Todd (Becky) De Longe and Megan De Longe; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Nadine Hennaman of South Milwaukee; brother Boyd Wampole of Manitowoc; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her husband, Avis was also preceded in death by her parents and 13 siblings: Gerald, Walter, Lyle, Royce, Stanley, Delbert and Robert Wampole, Vernice Wagner, Ida Buend, Sadie Marten, Edith Hennaman, Ione Swanson and Reva Flick.

A thanksgiving and celebration of Avis’ life will take place Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jen Barnet officiating. A visitation will start at 1 p.m. Interment will be at a later date in the Fairchild Cemetery.
